Thanks Rik: I have blocked cookies, so will see what happens.
But perhaps the best way to handle it is to 1st type everything into Notepad then Copy and Paste.
Trouble is I often forget to do this and type directly into the reply window as now.

What exactly is the ventral surface? I checked the definition but it only mentioned something to do with gill. I wouldn't call the initial challenge unrealistic just yet... at least not until more people had a go at it. My problem right now is finding it. Just a few questions... when are th...

Digitized yesterday from a Kodachrome 64 slide taken in 1990. Slide film will stay 'fresh' for several months if kept cold; not sure if it can be safely kept frozen for any length of time. It's been a while since I used Kd64 but I recall that the 'amateur' version is not really ready to be used when...

Am I doing something wrong?
For the second time in 2 days this problem has occurred. I log in, type a reply - not timed but perhaps 3 minutes (OK, so I'm a slow typist); hit the preview button and am taken back to the "Log in" page so losing all the gems I had just typed.

I tried photographing free-roaming specimens of these from above a few years ago. Not a single photo worth keeping! They are fast, agile little buggers. OK the initial challenge was unrealistic. How about changing it to: "a close-up dorsal shot of a live whirligig, or whirligigs, in its (their) nat...

6-spotted Forester moth
http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/569_img017_1.jpg Langton's Forester, 6-spotted Forester Alypia langtoni . Wingspan about 2.5cm. The bright colours of this day-flying, North American, moth suggest that it is poisonous to would-be predators. 1990 Kodachrome, FE2, MF105mm Micro Nikkor, f...

I haven't even thought about how to do it. The challenge is to get the photo. Although it will be interesting to see how it gets done, if indeed it does get done. There's no deadline, and no prize. I will give it a shot next year if no one does it sooner. Doubt that I will see any more whirligigs th...

If you want shadows, simply move the specimen closer to the background, or even substitute a dark sheet for the white paper so that less light is reflected from beneath. If you want lots of shadow then don't use any diffuser. Used in the vertical position with a live bug sitting on a leaf will give ...

Re: A difficult subject, some compromise needed!
and that is the problem when going in close-wind! But to get lots of DOF you need a small aperture, and that means a long exposure, which when its windy is not an option! If only I had a flashgun! When I was into plant photography I made a frame out of 1/2" PVC tubing, using the available 3-way cor...
