Thanks for a very informative post with great pictures. What brand is your 4 way focusing rail? On looking on e-bay I see many similar items for around US$30, but have no idea of their quality.

BTW, when you connect your My guess is that CCP2 is talking to the camera directly, with no more support from Mac OS than basic USB. (That's certainly the way that I'd do it, if I were in Nikon's shoes.) In my research on the internet, I have found that older Mac OS's have worked with Nikon Capture...

Aperture setting for tube lens

Back when I was doing a lot of photomicroscopy, after setting up for Köhler illumination, I would remove the photomicroscope eyepiece and view the exit pupil of the objective (actually the Zeiss photomicroscope had an Optovar that could do this without removing the eyepiece). I would then close down...

Hhmm.... Here are some screenshots that I took just now, running my D800E with Camera Control Pro 2 version 2.17.0 on Mac OS X 10.10.5 on a quite ancient Mac mini. What configuration is not working for you? --Rik Rik, Thanks for the speedy reply. My configuration is shown below. https://photos.smug...

Camera Control Pro2 substitute for MacbookPro

Rik describes how Camera Control 2 Pro can be used with the Stackshot Controller interface, but unfortunately this software does not work with the Nikon D800e. The camera is not recognized in the finder and one gets an error message that the camera is not recognized. This is puzzling, since Lightroo...

Re: Soap film interference colours take 3

In take 2 I solved the motion blur just using a higher shutter speed but the shots still had OOF areas due to the angle of the camera to the soap film needed to see the colours. With take 3 I added more glycerol to the soap mix and found the colour patterns stopped swirling around. This allowed me ...

Re: Help to start!

Hello Everyone, I want to buy a Mitutoyo 5X and 10X, can I use my 70-200 mm Nikkor (at 200mm) or is a real 200 mm tube Lens Nikon better? I bought a used Nikon 100 mm f/4 that is in excellent condition (newer model with the all black lens barrel) for less than US $100 on ebay. It takes a 52 mm filt...

Bill, thanks for the excellent test. I don't understand exactly how the last 4 columns differ from each other, but the values are all close enough that I'll take them as equivalent. I suspect a data entry error someplace in the first column, because although magnification increases monotonically, t...

Re: Focus Stacking with Rail: focal length and perspective

It would seem to me that using a longer focal length lens would mitigate changes in perspective, since the traverse of the focus stack would be proportionally less as compared to the object distance. Would this be meaningfully significant? Yes. A good model is that what matters is the ratio between...

Focus Stacking with Rail: focal length and perspective

In his excellent post on comparing focus stacking with a rail or by turning the focusing ring, Rik notes that at medium magnification (say a flower), it is better to use the ring. Using the rail will result in changes in perspective that the stacking program may have trouble dealing with. It would s...

Re: First ever shot with Micro Nikkor f2.8 55mm AF-S

Well I just received the first of two 55mm F2.8 AF-S Micro Nikkors I bought on eBay for my D7200. This one is #37****, which makes it what, somewhere in the late '70s early '80s? I have another one coming that is mid 4*****. Both were very cheap. Whatever, this one is in mint condition with very cl...

Wow great colors! Would you care about a bit more explanation working with retarder filters? It's unknown to me. Retarder filters are widely used with polarized light microscopy and the retarder plates are supplied by the microscope manufacturer. Nikon Microscopy gives a good explanation with examp...

From a theoretical point of view, information lost through diffraction is truly gone, and cannot be restored as true information by any post-processing algorithms. However, with the right assumptions and right parameters, images post-processed by deconvolution are indeed perceived as visually impro...

Bill, I can't answer as to the specific lenses you mention. I just want to point out that since you are using a full frame camera (24x36mm sensor) you are likely going to find that you can experience vignetting (and/or poor corner performance) with certain lenses when they are used as the tube lens...
