Thanks for the identifications, Rik.

This was my first post in quite a few months. Between a lack of butterflies and last year's drought's inhibiting mushroom growth, I didn't do much photography.

A few local denizens

Other than the Cicada, I can't identify the following finds. Some assistance would be appreciated. Other than the little white cabbage Butterflies, the more pretty types that sit for their photos while eating were practically non-existent this year! Here's my buggy selection. Are these Stentors?

These two well-stuffed critters were photographed in a water sample from a local pond. I think they are some kind of Stentor but there was no visible cilia or mouths. They moved fairly slowly. Help with ID, please. The magnification was 100X with achromatic optics and a Lifecam webcam. Lighting was ...

hidy place

I found this spider hiding in a gate handle. It was flattened almost to invisibility. My very first shot was too blurred to use so the spider isn't completely flattened out in the first shot here. The flash likely put it on guard. It looks much larger in the second shot. Jim http://www.photomacrogra...

Harold:

"Up to scratch". I haven't heard that one in years. Thanks for the memory!

Did it originate in merry old England like the language itself?

Good spider camo.

My four year-old grandson spotted this spider on a roadside flower. He's better than I am at finding these critters because he's closer to the ground than I am.

I don't know what it is but its a fine-looking specimen.

Nice fur coat

Here's a pretty caterpiler I found on my driveway. It looks like some kind of Tussock.

What is it really?

Thanks Harold and Yann.

My 4 year-old grandson likes to play with bugs and carry them around to new locations, particularly sow bugs, lady bugs and grasshoppers.

Local insects

The red admiral was part of the early spring awakening.

I don't know what the creepy-looking bug is. It's about 1/4 inch long.

Thanks Harold:

I just corrected a couple of typos in my entry. My hands and mind don't always synchronize like they should.
