The next piece of kit I want to get is a good flash and I have high hopes of being able to apply a similar technique to that described by Robin Wong on his website. Something like "diffused handheld off camera flash for insect photography". What I do want to avoid though, is that sort of butterflies...

The freehand stacking was rocking backwards in burst mode when I had the EM5 i. I now have an Em1 i just like you I think, so my stacks are still handheld, but I am now holding the camera still and the camera is changing the focus. It certainly helps in the sense that I don't cut off feet or antenna...

Sapphire butterfly

At the moment, Iolaus trimeni or Trimen's sapphire is probably my favorite butterfly to photograph. Their white underside is remarkably difficult to see against the shiny dark green leaves of the small trees they tend to prefer. Usually they go to small hilltops and settle as high as possible, which...

Having put a reversed lens in front of the 40-150, one definitely does have to start at the minimum focusing distance to avoid running out of focus travel with the combination I tried. I don't have the adapters, but holding the same lens in front of the 60 mm macro does seem to have less of an issue...

A nice observation! Is it common for spiders to bite their prey in half, rather than just suck out the juices.I really like the way you your remarks give context to your pictures.

Handheld stacking - or just take the picture?

The weather has been good for butterflies recently and I have been able to photograph at least four species that I had never seen before. Most of them have been at a place I have found at the top of the Magaliesberg which just seems to have more insect action than the surrounding areas. It's about f...
