Ray, in my experience the TC method does work very well to distinguish the quality of lenses, especially long telephoto ones. I have used that method informally all my life. But I have looked mostly at center resolution. For that purpose I do think it is a great way to quickly check quality of a len...

That's a good point, austrokiwi. But in relative terms, what I've shown is that the TC image is better than the PN +extension in the central 17mm image circle. That holds true in FF as well. Though a FF camera's bigger pixels may not show as strong a difference as my 50-80 Mp 17mm sensor. What TC di...

Hope you are not suffering too much there.

Wow, I just looked up Javier Aznar's portfolio. Really amazing stuff:

Smokedaddy, I should note that most of these cameras don't actually process the stack, you still need Zerene and that still takes more than two minutes. of course. A few cameras do manage to process the stack as well, but as you know, no stacker worth his salt would let a machine make all the decisi...

No, not stacking video frames. In-camera focus bracketing, as implemented in the bodies of recent Olympus and Panasonic cameras (and software solutions that provide the same functionality for other cameras), automatically takes up to 1000 photos at full sensor resolution and including RAW files, eac...

I did briefly meet Javier but we had little time to talk. He was kind enough to provide IDs for some of my group's photos. Sorry to hear about your Leishmaniasis, a serious occupational hazard of nocturnal tropical photographers and biologists. I understand that the modern treatments are much improv...

I'm trying to figure that out. I've never heard of such a thing, and it seems like the kind of thing one would hear about. Maybe it is new. I have preserved the specimen. Any arachnologists out there reading this?

Frog-mimic spider

Two students of mine, Natalia Espinoza and Dylan Moore, found this spider in our Rio Zunac Reserve in Ecuador. They at first thought it was a small tree frog. Here is a stack of a few hand-held images: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/5272_20170719152739_ZS_PMax_1.jpg Here's a stack of ...

I made a fast 150 image stack of a live frog-mimic spider a few weeks ago, and I will post it on a new thread.

Beautiful set as usual. Sorry I missed you there at Sani a couple of weeks ago. The baby turtle is from the breeding project there?

Keep in mind that there are some very fast stacking methods, especially methods that refocus camera lenses rather than moving a rail. 150 shots per minute are normal, and thousands per minute would be possible if there were a big enough buffer to store the files and a fast enough transfer speed to t...

Austrokiwi, it is always a challenge to find a lens that is good enough to benefit from a teleconverter. Also, if the lens is not so highly optimized for a particular magnification, and is designed to perform well over a wide range of extension distances, maybe a teleconverter doesn't make sense. Bu...

Yes Chris, 10x at right. There's no hint of this detail in the normal image, but sensor-shifting and then fancy math can bring it out. Very cool.
