Great set and an interesting variety of forms.
Those Glyphodiscus sp. are generally quite rare in (most) Oamaru material. Often tiny and easy to miss too. Nice find.
Cheers

Those are really cool. Pun intended - I'm here all week
Nice work. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Diatom dotting - again, but smaller
Beatsy, not quite the same contrast as yours, but this was my go using a 63x Leitz NA 1.40 Plan Apo objective, and 365nm light - https://jmcscientificconsulting.com/uv-microscopy-high-resolution-imaging-poroids-in-pinnularia-diatoms/ You still got all the details though, NA is the thing. Great resu...

Re: Diatom dotting - again, but smaller
Impressive resolution! Was the 16 frame pixel shift enough to out-resolve the performance of the objective or could you squeeze even more out of the objective with a higher resolution sensor? I'm pretty sure I get all the detail with 4-shot pixel shift actually (mainly to preserve colour resolution...

Re: Poltergeist in my basement
Does your camera have any settings for sensor stabilization? I don't know if it could be related :-k I have thought about that. Yes, the camera do have IBIS. I have it turned off, but not sure if sensor is still "floating" or is being locked :-k When shooting in HR it's floating though for an obvio...

Diatom dotting - again, but smaller
I hit a personal best today, resolving the dots in Pinnularia sp. at 185nm spacing. Shot under brightfield, 365nm UV light with a 100/1.4 objective. Single image (no stacking) but shot with 16-shot pixel shift for improved resolution and image scale. Contrast was enhanced using tone-mapping in Affin...

Re: Debunking the high NA / coverslip correction myth
Great picture and proof of the concept. I understand that older (ancient) finite optics microscopes allowed you to adjust the tube length to compensate for coverslips and correct for SA. Same principle I guess.

Very engaging image, as always. Great stuff.

A small diatom arrangement
With winter imminent a diatom arrangement idea sprang to mind. Then OCD demanded it be done. So here it is, a diatom "snow globe". Snow Globe--pmn.jpg I selected material from a mystery vial of cleaned diatoms for this one. It was labelled "small unknown" and was indeed nearly all small forms with o...

Re: Poltergeist in my basement
You say it's not heat related, but could the (what looks like) metal table be expanding and contracting with room temperature changes? You've only got (something like) 0.5µm DoF with a high NA 50x objective and there's quite a lot of table between the rail and the subject positioner. There could eas...

Re: Noobie with new lens and new concerns
I have that Neewer Telephoto Lens Support Bracket. I got it for longer/heavier macro setups. It's fine for use on a tripod (presumably in the field), but that "dangly down" bit at the front is a pain in a studio setting. I had to raise my rail setup quite far above the table top to accomodate it - a...
