Tiny Brass Hardware
Hi Gang!! This shot has a back story, so read on. I was dismantling some electrical gear (rack-mountable), and came across a small silver-plated aluminum box that had RF (radio frequency) components. I decided to take it apart and found it very interesting. Inside was a small circuit board screwed t...

Florida Cicada Nymphal Skeleton
Hi Gang!
I sometimes find these on the outside wall of my garage, and I took this one in for a photo shoot!
Amazing how the tarsal claws are so formidable.

By request, my setup
Hi Gang For some reason, I have been asked to post info about my macro photography setup, so here goes. I have two major setups or macro workstations. One is used for horizontal work, and the other is for vertical work. HORIZONTAL WORK The horizontal station is composed of an optical breadboard and ...

Re: Dry Wood Termite Poo
Hi Rik I used a D850 in DFX crop mode with a Navitar macro zoom, at full zoom, which on the scale is 7.5 I do not know the exact specs at full zoom, but the measurements I made with the calipers would be the size to go with. Also, I am sure there is variation between each pellet. The pellets look li...

Re: Dry Wood Termite Poo
Hi guys Ok, Rik... I expect the image to not be at scale because when I did the final edit in Photoshop, there were stacking artifacts along the right edge. I cut those out and cut an equal band across the bottom so I could "scale up" slightly, therefor the frass IS a little larger than the original...

Re: Polyphemus eggs
Hi
I have done this once before, and I realize that a lot will not survive.
I use Live Oak leaves, which they too like.
It will be fun to share with my Grandson.

Dry Wood Termite Poo
Hi Gang! Dry Wood Termite Poo is called frass. The frass measures .83 mm long by .46 mm wide, as it is cylindrical and very small. Back Story I built a nice card catalog cabinet for my wife, with hand-cut dovetails for the carcass and half-blind dovetails for the drawers. I used Alder for the carcas...

Polyphemus eggs
Hi Gang!!! The eggs are somewhat oval and measure 2.34 mm by 2.57 mm. Back Story Several months ago, at a park near my home, I came across a polyphemus moth cocoon wrapped tightly in an oak tree branch. Not wanting it to be attacked by species of insects, such as wasps, I decided to take it home and...

Fir Tussock Moth cocoon
Hi Gang! I discovered TWO of these near the same live Oak tree leaf. Looked interesting and to my best guess, it is a Tussock Moth Cocoon. Three shots to show ever-increasing detail. Common name: fir tussock moth Scientific name: Orgyia detrita Guérin-Méneville, 1831 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Lymantri...
