Possible diffuser / light tent material.
I've just bought an 'Underbed Storage bag' from Lidl for £1.29, which at 120x50x15cm gives you about 1.7sqm for that amount. I currently use a bit of white dacron but have tried other stuff too and intend to give the above a whirl when have time. As Lidl change this sort of stock on a weekly basis, ...

Well - as someone who'll only use non-rechargeable batteries as an absolute last resort, I'm 'with' both of you - my comment was based on reading the word 'pile', which suggested a fair number of items :) In my own case this would've prompted a course of action similar to what I originally suggested...

Fly with prey
Turned round to collect one of my supports (a plastic beer crate) and noticed this happy scene.
Wondered what the white object (inset @ 100%) is ... about 1.2mm long ...egg?

Hope these help. Lens is basically just a push fit inside a bit of conduit joint. Canon converter P ... FD mount one side, 42mm internal thread. Home made bit (complete with blutack) to marry both together ... via a plastic cable gland. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/72__MG_2488800_1....

Lenses from flatbed scanners
Probably not the best pic to illustrate the topic, but was taken during one of the few opportunities I had (a couple of months ago) with this sort of subject matter. I was given various bits of duff IT kit to take apart and there were 5 A4 flatbed scanners amongst them. Each of these had a small len...

The main thing I noticed (last yr) was BFs taking flight (sometimes) when the pre-flash fired - which was generally a pita as the pic had just been composed. I then backed off a little, anticipating said behaviour and tried to get some take off / in-flight shots ... but only half succeeded ... bits ...

Minor / prob insignificant comment about attaching stuff to flash heads ... These days, the first thing I do is make a cardboard sleeve (usually cereal packet material) to wrap around the head. Wrap it round (tight sliding fit), cut the ends so they just butt join, rather than overlap, and fix with ...
