Since that occurs after the exposure, it has no effect on that photo, so most people don't care about it. I do because of my moveable subjects; the vibrations don't affect the present picture but do affect the next one. Not entirely after the exposure. According to Jim Kasson it takes about 2.5 ms ...

On page 217 they discuss the focus shift (stacking) feature. It can not be used with live view Well, that's $3500 I don't need to spend then. I had no interest in this feature anyway, so no harm no foul in my case. All I care about is: FF EFCS (or better yet full electronic shutter) No AA filter De...

Re: Nikon D850 focus step size at 1:1 magnification
Dear Bill, Has this body an electronic shutter ? Yes, it does. However flash synch options are uncertain. Bill By my understanding, the camera is a DSLR with Mirror and Mechanical shutter. However, Nikon has enabled a fully-electronic shutter that operates only when the camera is in Live View mode....

William over at Wemacro has a really nice vertical stand for $100 that is hard to beat for convenience & cost. It's quite sturdy and takes up little space, and even comes with a coarse X&Y subject positioner. http://www.wemacro.com/?product=vertical-stand Best, Mike The price is attractive but ship...

Ray, According to the online D850 manual, page 212, it supports AF-S and AF-P lenses. Not sure if this means only Nikon lenses or 3rd party lens too. Best, Mike I interpret this to indicate that the microstep auto focus stacking is supported only with the AF-S and AF-P lenses which have a built in ...

Nikon D850 focus step size at 1:1 magnification
Leonard Sheppard was fortunate enough to obtain a Nikon D850 and performed a focus stack at a magnification of approximately 1:1 with the smallest step size of 1 with the 105 mm VR. He took 30 shots covering a distance of about 4 mm, giving a step size of 0.133 mm. According to Rik's DoF table, the ...

Bill, My note about manual exposure is that you don't need to read out the sensor to get the exposure, it's set manually. Thus you just use a long exposure and trigger the flash sometime during the long exposure, the key here is to let the flash be pretty much the only light that exposes the image....

Older Nikon SLR bodies with full electronic shutters, the D50, D70 etc, could sync flash up to 1/4000th sec. no problem. Robert As I recall the D70 was CCD with a global electronic shutter. As far as I know, global electronic shutters are not available in CMOS dSLRSs, although some high end CMOS mo...

Seems Nikon finally listened to some of the users and incorporated a few of those requests!! Will be interesting to see how the silent shutter and flash work together, soon we shall see :D Best, Mike I don't think that flash will work very well with the electronic shutter, since the readout time to...

It's not a camera issue, but no, ZS doesn't accept Raw. Helicon sort-of does, but wouldn't you prefer to use your favourite Raw >Tiff processing program? Stacking time in ZS depends on MP, not file size. My new fast-ish but not unusual PC should stack PMax at about 12-15 frames of 45MP per minute. ...

Very interesting! I was afraid it was something like that. I suggest touching base with the support people at Helicon. Perhaps they've seen it before. --Rik I will do that. The mis-ordering of the images was suggested by the observation that the artifact was present with DMAP but not PMAX. I would ...

OK, I took a detailed look at the 17-frame stack. Focus order there is quite weird. Starting in frame 001, focus moves up the target page in 002, stays almost unchanged in 003, moves down a hair in 004, then progressively up in frames 005 though 008. In img_009 it jumps down again, farther up in 01...
