Re: exctracting the lenses from Raynox DCR-150

Lothar, this is a very useful post! I've often wondered just what was inside a Raynox DCR-150, and how to take one apart and mount its elements within a lens tube that has more general use. Thanks for doing the fundamental work. :D (I've long wanted--but can't quite justify--a metal lathe. If I'd bo...

Re: Halos when using Mitutoyo 10x - how to solve?

That sounds even better! Do you use a special target or "just" text? Just text, but here are some things I've picked up through trial and error: In Microsoft Word, it's possible to enter a very small font size. For some fonts, this number can be much smaller than the lowest number listed in the dro...

Re: Halos when using Mitutoyo 10x - how to solve?

But it's still great to check for sharpness and aberrations, especially since I don't have any silicon wafers to test with ;-) I do have silicon wafers, but at low magnifications such as 5x, I prefer to test on laser-printed paper glued onto a microscope slide. I illuminate the paper frontally with...

Re: Goniometer Recommendation

The question in this thread is about a two-axis goniometer.

Alan, the item you referenced doesn't appear to include any goniometer at all. I don't think it is on topic for this thread.

Re: which nosepiece for M26x36 TPI / Mitutoyo lenses?

Lothar,

I have a Mitutoyo nosepiece that I intended to integrate into my rig, but never did. If this might work for your project, feel free to email me.

Re: Goniometer Recommendation

Alan,

At that link, I see translation on the x and y axes and rotation around the Z axis, but no other rotational axes.Given that the question here is specifically about these rotational axes, that stage doesn't look to address the need.

What am I missing?

Re: Goniometer Recommendation

Habusho, You might have a look at goniometers from Thorlabs . I use a Thorlabs GNL20 goniometer pair (which is the same thing as a Thorlabs GNL18 lower goniometer plus a GNL10 upper goniometer), and am very happy with it. You can see this goniometer pair in my macro rig: The Bratcam . Note that Thor...

Re: A fen is a special place -- and there is an orchid

. . .There are different zones in a fen, certainly, with different plants in them. Very true. I used to delineate wetlands with a scientist who was eminent in the Great Lakes Basin. Since fen is a highly-protected wetland type under federal regulations (and also interesting to us), we were particul...

Re: Nikon Small World eligible lenses

Some years ago, I contacted Nikon Small World and showed them the Bratcam . I was told that it was a homemade microscope, that homemade microscopes were definitely eligible, and that contest organizers were excited to have more participation from homemade microscopes. (Or words to that effect.) In t...

Re: Shipping Microscopes or parts to the USA.

I did not realize this. Thanks for the info. Almost nothing I've bought from overseas has had import duty added, but one Mitutoyo objective did. I wondered why, and suspect it was a misclassification as you describe. As the amount of duty wasn't much, I didn't worry about it. But this good to know. ...

Re: 2x Mitutoyo objective. Any good?

There is very little hassle in removing and using the lens from a Minolta 5400 scanner. Scavenging the lens requires a screwdriver and ten minutes. (Or if you're curious, like me, another 20 minutes for looking around at the rest of the scanner parts.) Sym P. Le showed you where to get the adapter--...

Re: 2x Mitutoyo objective. Any good?

I am currently using a reversed El Nikkor 50 mm F2.8n on a bellows and I was wondering if there was anything with better resolution between 1X and 3.5 X. Your reversed Nikkor is a good place to start--many of us began our high-magnification journey there. For the higher end of the range you cite--a...

Very well-done, interesting, and convincing tests, Lothar. =D> The difference in that Lincoln penny is spectacular. Also, it was notable how well the diagonal lines held up on your rotated chip. Sony rulez {-X (<- just kidding) As a Nikon shooter, this thread has me experiencing some Sony envy. Niko...

Re: Using chatGPT to answer a flea question

. . . Its description was badly wrong in that it wrote a very generic description of animal development, which is NOT what insect embryos are like at all. I would have failed that description. But I bet it assembled it from commonly used words around the subject of development. In another instance ...
