I am going to have to say that it is not a closeup-close-up like we usually have here. I mean if it wasn`t a beautiful animal photo and was a human head or baby photo, it would not fit as a closeup IMO. Yippee -- I got it right!! :D  What I wrote to Joan was this: About the lion... There's no ...

Oh, this brings back memories! I loved to rear these things as a child -- I remember they would sit clasping a stick, staring up at the water surface where tasty morsels would often drop onto the water. At least, that's what they did until too many morsels appeared too quickly. Then they would turn ...

"UGLY"??!! Hmmpphh! I'll have you know that I am very fond of these creatures!

It's a face only a mother could love, perhaps, but I have raised many of these. :D

Interesting textures on a chunk of anatomy we don't see very often! Now that I actually see this one, Joan, I'm inclined to think it's a bit outside our usual bounds for "closeup". But I'm not hard over about that, and it's helpful from time to time to have something that pushes the boundaries just ...

It looks sharp as a shark's tooth. It sure does! I did some follow-up study, and I was interested to find that some of that rough and rugged appearance is apparently due to wear. Here is a side-by-side comparison. http://www.janrik.net/MiscSubj/2007/CricketMandibles20071220/CricketMandibles...

Ralf, thanks for the confirmation. I think you are right, that part of the impression is due to assumption that spores should be very small. (I am gradually learning better, from recent postings & discussion such as here .) Another part is that image #2 is lower contrast and does not have the small ...

Gee, I was hoping that somebody would immediately recognize this unusual form. Apparently I should not be too embarrassed by the fact that I don't either! Caddisflies and spiders can be ruled out by the environment and the form of the bug. I can't rule out hymenoptera, though I also can't recall eve...

Ralf, these are beautiful and interesting images & info.

Can you confirm the scale for me, please? Images #2 and #3 have almost the same scale bars, but #2 somehow gives the impression of being much higher magnification. :?

No need to blush at that mistake, Joan -- the syrphids do an incredible job of imitating bees. I've never seen anybody guess right on first encounter. To learn more, visit syrphidae.com . It's a whole web site dedicated to this one family of flies. There is a gallery of photos of most European speci...

Hah! You think this is a mouthful, you should have seen the long versions from when we were trying to figure it out in the first place!

I can provide gobs of links to those, but to tell the truth, I'd recommend the short version first.

Oh, man...this hurts my head... These are worms, right? Which reproduce asexually by binary fission as a normal process? This is way too complicated for me...I'm gonna go back to the spider book that my kid got me for Christmas. Sperm and eggs I understand, sort of... Very nice pics, BTW. :D --Rik

If my morning coffee goes cold tomorrow when I spend my time looking at it through a polarizer rather than drinking it, do I get to give you grief. But of course! Most of my friends need much less excuse than that, to give me grief! I'm glad you found the explanation helpful. It's alw...

I see that from now on I will have to add in which camera I take the pics with to avoid confusion. :) Joan, I can't recall any recent discussions about the effect of sensor size, so I'll take the opportunity here. If you're going to be switching back and forth between P&S and DSLR, maybe it'll make...

Graham, What you're doing sounds more like what's called an "object movie", even though usually they're interactive. See http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/InsideQT_QTVR/3Chap/chapter_4_section_5.html . The typical movie is only cylindrical, but there are full spherical versions also...
