You might want to look at: http://blog.kasson.com/d850/a-hassy-like-mirror-up-control-for-the-d850/ In general all seems well, with the qualification that there is no flash sync signal sent in "Silent Live View Photography" mode. (I just tried it for confirmation.) Perhaps another downside is sensor...

Jim Kasson has measured the readout speeds for some electronic shutters: Sony A7rII about 1/14 sec, Fujifilm GFX-50s fully 1/4 sec. Camera manufacturers could offer flash triggering at a suitable delay with suitably long shutter speeds, but presumably some feel it would create more confusion than it...

Electronic shutters in DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are generally scanning things -- they take a while to sweep across the frame, they are not "global" electronic shutters, so they do not play nice with lighting of brief duration or cycling, eg at twice mains frequency. https://www.dpreview.com/arti...

Both the Manual (p212) and the Menu Guide (p80) state that Silent Photography is an available option with Focus Shift Shooting. Five release modes are available, continuous shooting at 5fps or with a selectable delay for flash recharging. You initiate the focus-stepping sequence from a menu page by ...

Venus 60mm f/2.8
Of course most of us need this like we need, well, ah, another lens, but let it be noted that a new Chinese manufacturer (www.venuslens.net) is offering a 60mm f/2.8 macro lens focusing from infinity to 2X without attachments. US$379 postpaid, in four major mounts. Nine elements, some of them appare...

Yousef, I didn't fully understand all the intricacies of EFCS when I posted. It is true that selecting EFCS and Delay Mode does not result in an EFCS exposure, but if Mup is selected as well, the combination of all three works in a fairly rational way: the first press of the release immediately rais...

Chris, I wouldn't be quite so dismissive of Lumo's contentions. His papers look to me like they could survive pretty critical refereeing, the latter an activity I once had a good deal of experience with. Even a very solid tripod still may ring at the micron level when excited by shutter/mirror motio...

http://blog.kasson.com/?m=201407 This has a number of the tests; scroll down. Don't know nothing about tethered myself, but Chris says use USB for the tethering and the 10-pin for actual shutter release (two presses, owing to mirror-up mode). As to diff from Canon, wouldn't it come down to second-c...

Bumping this thread for several reasons. To NikonUser: Sometimes Nikon manuals are a bit mysterious. EFCS works normally with an AIS non-chipped lens, in spite of the strange language on page 323 of the manual. I had failed to notice that shutter delay can be superimposed on mirror-up with EFCS, so ...

Ray, I'm totally ignorant regarding tethered mode. Mirror-up mode is compatible with on-camera live view: the first press blacks the screen silently (since the mirror is already up), and the second makes the exposure. Is it just that the tethering software doesn't support the press-twice regime? Is ...

Nikon EFCS seems to work
This is all preliminary, but some things are clear after ~80 comparison exposures with the D800e and D810 on some hilariously rickety tripod setups using an old Gitzo travel tripod which the designers had unwisely fitted with a telescoping centerpost. A very small ball head supported a Nikkor 70-200...

No Chris, I don't think Kasson has posted anything systematic on this subject. If you look at his blog over the past year or so, however, I think you will agree he is not your average photo forum punter. His opinion carries some weight with me, at least, perhaps especially in that it runs contrary t...

Before answering Chris's question I'd like to repeat: "don't think it is going to happen" "some modest demand" I might well pay $100 for an adapter that let me use my 180mm Tamron EF-mount lens on the F-mount, if the adapter had a numbered ring permitting stopping down 1,2,3, etc stops. (I do not ha...
