A simple clean background, with a very detailed subject. Very nice! 8) Amazing as to how the organism that once lived here was able to construct such an exquisite structure out of the four nucleotides that all living organisms posses.

Not to say that there are not others having been posted, I don't know, but I do believe that this is the first frontal shot of a freshwater mite that I have ever seen. Interesting to see that it has what appears to be "fangs" also! A very good image there Christian :D

Cutting up galls

Taking my usual late afternoon/early evening stroll through the woodlands here at home and came across a number of galls on the leaves of a young Hickory, I think it is. Anyway, got curious, cut one open and had a look through the Meiji :) http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/4_IMG_0031_Mei...

I would imagine. :-k I'm digiscoping, quite a simple set up really. We don't get overly carried away here in the foothills of the Appalachia. Thanks Lou :D

Great idea and images! Makes me want to see what is on my local tree trunks. What was the magnification on the top image? All but the last were at X400 using a Zeiss 40X/0.65 CP Achromat. I suspect they belong to the Nostocales, and though what might be heterocysts, seem to be scattered. As for siz...

I need to visit one of the ponds in my local park and grab a couple of samples or pay a visit to my local trout stream or both. I used to keep jars of protozoa sitting around and would enjoy them hours on end at the microscope but got fascinated by amoebae and then got even more curious about plasmo...

I can imagine! High heat, low humidity but it would also be a good place to look for extremophiles. Thanks nanometer :D

Cyanobacteria from tree bark

During my daily quest for corticulous myxomycetes, I noticed the dark almost blackish-green gelatinous spheres either singly or in clusters along the surface of the tree bark I was observing or searching with the dissecting microscope. Slime mold plasmodia are very elusive sometimes, or can be, what...
