Small red rock, weathered gray roots, fuzzy green plants

http://www.janrik.net/MiscSubj/2007/RockAndFuzzyPlants20071208/IMG_0214_fp.jpg This is just a little still life that I shot on a hike earlier this summer. Same day and just a few hundred feet away from the Bee flies that I posted right after I got back. I ran across it tonight while looking through...

Interesting eye -- big ommatidia all over the top half, noticeably smaller on the bottom.

I guess this critter spends a lot of time looking up and also down, but for different things!

Interesting and attractive!

PS. These image files are longer than the posting guidelines allow. Should be 200 KB or less; these are almost twice that big. Just set that quality slider a bit lower when you save the jpeg.

WOW! :D At only 800 pixels in this web-sized image, I doubt very much that anyone could tell what type camera made it. But I'm happy to take your word that the D3 is better. What I'm going "WOW!" about is just the beauty and cleanliness of the image. Yeah, OK, some of that is from post-processing. B...

I just added some words to my vocabulary! Well, anatomy is certainly the right place to do that ! I was poking around that url you gave, and found this description of a critter that I thought I was pretty familiar with. Ha! Ha-ha! Hahahahahahaha!!! (...trailing off maniacally...) --Rik

As far as the shells of crustaceans are concernd, see my reply here: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=12401 Bernhard, thanks for reminding me of those photos & explanations. I recall now being intrigued by the textures in your excellent photos. But in those photos, the shell st...

Cute! :D

Unless I miss my guess, what you've imaged here is the "micropyle" of an egg. (That's the little hole where sperm enters. )

I have not looked closely at this type egg before. Interesting texture right around that thing.

(And this guy is asking us how to do underwater macro? Sheesh!!)

Beautiful images, Ryan. :D Any clue what is that white-dot thing stuck on the crab's antenna, pic #2?

There is no shame in machining marks! It's very nicely done. :D

My lathe and mill don't get nearly enough exercise. :(

For some reason, I had ACR output set to 12mp instead of 7.5. I suppose now I'll have to pixel peep to see if there is any detail loss :) Well, you're probably not going to lose any detail that the sensor originally caught. On the other hand, producing 31,230,400 pixels from only 14,751,744 sensor ...

Do you do the machining yourself, or contract it out?

I am no computer geek either and had thought development had slowed down a bit... Processor speed has definitely hit a plateau. In theory, performance for most types of data-intensive applications should continue to improve by exploiting multi-core processors. In practice, it is not so easy to make...

Dave's point is important. Vista is getting a lot of bad reports for both memory consumption and speed. I use XP Pro on all my machines, but will most likely be forced over to Vista at some point when I buy new systems. (It's interesting, though, that Dell is now back to selling new machines with XP...

I'm a little squeamish about suggesting this, but another option is to buy memory on eBay or from some used-computer store. I did a quick search on eBay for "PC800" and turned up a lot of ads for stuff at tolerable prices, that says it's sealed and guaranteed to work on Dimension 8200, from sellers ...
