Re: Euglena sanguinea from a pond [not Haematococcus!]
Wow Viktor! Very nice photographs. I have seen some DIC images where the color pallete is just really beautiful, like yours is here. How do you achieve this? Is it playing around with your prism allignment, or using a wave plate? Or is it just that some prisms and sliders in combination produce thi...

Re: Wild M20 fine focus stopped working
On the M20, the course and fine focus are completely separate mechanisms. The coarse focus lifts the limb, while the fine focus lifts the stage. When you turn the fine focus knob, you rotate a lever (blue) that is attached to a vertical block (blue) that slides on roller bearings (red). The lever co...

Re: OK what about Zeiss standard DIC?
Having looked again at your data, I'm wondering if the laser beam was actually scattering off something inside the objective, like the edge of a lens element, and what you were measuring was a cone of light coming off the scattering point. Do you have any ideas along those lines? --Rik It was a cou...

Re: OK what about Zeiss standard DIC?
Glad you found it interesting. What data on the 4x do you refer to? The data in the graph, or the 15mm estimate? As I can recall, the 15mm estimate was based on pointing the objective at the sun and observing where the image was formed on a piece of paper. But the data in the graph suggests that the...

Re: OK what about Zeiss standard DIC?
Note that data for the 4x objective is nonsense, the laser pointer method don't work well with low magnification objectives with front lenses much larger than the beam diameter.

Re: OK what about Zeiss standard DIC?
And here's the spreadsheet with raw data and regressions:
Plots show A~B, where A is diameter of illuminated circle and B is distance from rear of objective.

Re: OK what about Zeiss standard DIC?
I wonder whether Nikon objectives with DIC engraving were verified to both be strain-free as well as having precisely registered back focal planes to accommodate relatively fixed prisms. A couple of years ago, when I bought the epi-DIC prisms discussed above, I made some experiments to learn more a...

Re: Dodging the infinity hump
1.4 should be too much. I think the practical limit for darkfield with the Heine is quite a bit lower than that. 1.15 maybe? But I'd be interested to hear people's opinions about optimizing the Heine for high-NA df. I have 3D printed an adapter for the Heine to use it on my Vanox AH. It works very w...

Re: nikon BD vs M objectives
Those prices are way out of budget. lol. I will keep looking. Got an offer for an 4 part M turrent with 2 prisms for 300 us. It has the 5 and 20 prisms. Dont know what prisms go in for a 10 and maybe 40 or 60x objective. I have 40x bd and would like to try 60x Also have a 40x m plan. 2.5 x m plan. ...

Oh cool, I've only held the RMS versions in my hands. Sorry to confuse!Scarodactyl wrote: ↑Sat Nov 26, 2022 10:32 amThe one pictured has m26 threads for bd plans. They also made a 4 position bd plan one with better mechanics and iirc there was one other m26 variant but I am not certain, it's been a while.

Re: nikon BD vs M objectives
But that nosepiece is RMS, so the BD objectives won't fit with their larger diameter thread, and an adapter would add some length and push the objective back focal plane away from the inference fringe, which can be highly detrimental. So I'd stay with M Plans, but you likely won't need the 'DIC' mar...

Is there a different one for full frame ? Didn't find that in a quick search.
