One simple way is with a gradient adjustment to exposure. I like to do this in Lightroom at the time of the initial raw conversion. A gradient set to increase the exposure by about 0.65 stops can be drawn up from the lower right hand corner of the original image. Stop pulling out the gradient about ...

Jennifer, Alost all of the finite era microscope objectives were computed with only some of their chromatic correction in the objective. The rest of the correction was left to be completed by the eyepiece. All of the big name made their eyepieces slightly differently. This is why objectives from one...

Jennifer, Here are a few other things for you to throw into the mix for thinking about. The easiest way to position one or more flashguns is to use a dial indicator stand. These are available very cheaply on ebay, e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261804804767?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=ST...

I am not sure that this light will give you what you seek. I tried my 100 watt Leica twin fibre optic light with the MPE. It was offering an exposure at 400 ISO of 1/80 of a second at F 4.0. Even if we assume that the extra power of the ebay offering gives out twice as much light, that still only gi...

dlg, This is a very interesting thread and provides food for thought. However, something appears to have gone wrong with the sizes of the two pictures which you have posted. They are supposed to be 1000 pixels on the long side. However, they are coming out at 850 x 768 pixels for the downsampled ful...

Rik and Beatsy, Glad that my suggestion was of some assistance. It really is a very flexible way to fine tune tonality. Although I scoffed at the idea of 1% opacity flowed 1% at a time, nevertheless it can occasionally be helpful to turn the settings down very low when you get close to the result th...

I do not think that there is a perfect answer as yet to this problem. However, a bit of careful localised burning can be used to improve the situation. Here is a quick and dirty proof of concept edit of your fly. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/637_Untitled1_2.jpg Here is what I did: -...

Chris, No idea how fast these things grow, but I cannot imagine that they take more than say 100 days. That would equate to 2 ridges per day. Mind you, these things are very small. This was about 5.4 mm from the tip of the mouth to the far side of the shell. Enrico, Thanks for your thoughts. I am no...

Chris, Now that is interesting. Here is another one, this time with 58% Gray. This is one of our most widespread and common land snails, Discus rotundatus . It was about 5.4 mm across. The specimen came from my garden. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/637_Discus_top_1.jpg I will not try...

Hi, Thanks to the three of you for taking the time to think about this and to reply. I had not really thought of this image as having any possibility of artistic merit! I was thinking about a guide to some of the land and freshwater shells here in Britain. Not a paper publication, just a PDF. Theref...

Effect of background colour on the appearance of an image

I have been playing around with a stacked image of a small pond snail, about 5 mm across. I wanted to display the snail against a uniform background, but what colour to choose? I cut out the snail and then tried a range of 7 different backgrounds, ranging from white through various shades of gray al...

Mike, Not sure if this is the original specification bulb for the illuminator, but try a Google search for G4 12v 20w bulb. This will give you a lot of options to try, as they are used in many low voltage kitchen lighting systems. High temperature versions are used is ovens. The basic kitchen bulbs ...

I use one like those shown in the following ebay listing: - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Sto-Fen-Omni-Bounce-For-Canon-MT-24-EX-MT24-Speedlites-Stofen-OM-24XSET-/380685555060?pt=UK_Photography_Flash_Diffusers&hash=item58a2a09574 Indeed, where it says "31 sold", my purchase accounts for the 1.
