Nice catching the mating wheel. It does get even harder, try taking a photo of Libellula depressa during mating. It last a few seconds, maybe nearly 10 if you're lucky, and the ydo not land :D g4lab, I'm convinced that what you've experienced was migrating dragonflies. They can move over long distan...

Sure you got the species right. The female is brownish coloured. One other thing, you also got the images right :D Maybe you actually saw a male trying to mate another male, it happens quite often in some species. But a bit strange for a species like this, where male and female colours are quite dif...

Extremadura #1, Eaten in Spain

This is my first post in a small series, after my visit to Spain, the Extremadura region southwest of Madrid. A wonderfull region of Spain it is with high mountains and not that populated. Plenty of beautiful rivers, many swarmed by dragonflies. :D Huge birds in the sky, vultures circling in numbers...

I like that first picture with the spider ready for action.
Interesting to see you've used both film and digital.

This must be Lestes parvidens , Eastern Willow Spreadwing. In Croatia you are fortunate to have both this species and it's western counterpart, Lestes viridis . Details on the female and the rather brownish pterostigma (wing markings) suggest the eastern species. All your pictures show what I think ...

Swedish dragonflies

I've been with seven fellow photographers on a four day trip to Sweden. I photographed three species of dragonflies that are extinct in Denmark. Three pictures, all uncropped, Canon 5D, Sigma 150. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3111/2568188194_da1c23037d_o.jpg Leucorrhinia caudalis , Lilypad Whitefa...

Fine shots, especially the second, which has a better background.

The C. virgo down at your location has completely dark wings (males) and should be slightly larger than in the rest of Europe.

Great behaviour photo.

I've seen a single photo showing a similar attack in another species too. Haven't really been able to capture the biting myself though. :D

Hi there, and welcome. Don't worry about the language, we are several here that are not all that good at English.

That is a great "head-shot" of a fly, with a good selection of focus point.

Can you say which equipement you used ? Always nice to know shutter speed, apperture etc. too.

Jim, the prey in your pictures shows some long thin yellow marks on top of the abdomen. There are infact two rows of yellow stripes, but only the side of the abdomen is seen in the pictures. I've checked with some pictures of mine, and the pattern on the thorax (below the wings) are also indicating ...
