If you are considering buying more RAM at today's steep prices I would recommend testing the free trial versions of other stacking software before you splurge on memory. Besides, it seems like its the cores and not the RAM that is giving you grief, so wouldn't buying more RAM simply make the "time u...

Impressive! It's a male Chrysura in the dichroa-complex, lots of similar species to choose from I'm afraid

Nice shots, the wasp belongs to the Platygastridae, classic egg parasitoids

Gosh - I honestly thought, for once, I'd actually nailed the ID myself (using online resources). I'll look it up tomorrow and edit as appropriate. Appreciate the info - even if it has rather burst my bubble! :) It is frustrating to be so consistently rubbish at ID'ing insects though... Thanks all f...

Nice, but its not an Ichneumon sp., nor is it Ichneumonini or Ichneumoninae, but it belongs to the Ichneumonidae though
Should be the subfamily Campopleginae, something like the genus Dusona.

Oh, and its a female, the ovipositor is quite short, but visible

Have you tried changing the material that is in contact with the surface that produces the reflection? I assume its currently air, or am I wrong? In the image with the red and green arrows, what happens if you instead stick some black tape to it, maybe that could reduce the reflections? Alternativel...

That quality increase is astounding!

If that program/technique could be made available to the rest of us it would be great! Is it a proprietary thing, or something we can look forward to in the future?

Did a real test; at 2.3x mag (which is around 100 mm from the sensor to the Lomo's shoulder) images taken from a single, totally unprocessed image that shows the vignetting and the difference in sharpness between the corner and centre. Saved as quality 12 jpg's, so they should be close to the origin...

Hard to say as I used a black background for these sets, but there appears to not be any darkening of the corners. When I pushed up the histogram to view the background there's no vignetting, as the background isnt 0/0/0 black it would have shown up I'd think. (this is not one of the images used in ...

Thanks! Yes, I'm very happy with how far its possible to push the little Lomo, both up and down in magnification. Wasp portraits

Two hymenoptera I've collected recently and shot in a fresh state, its a real treat to image them as they appear when alive, instead of the old dried collection specimens. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/3940_Chrysis_impressa_F_ABxxxx_Helenholm180530_1.jpg Chrysis impressa Schenck, 185...

BUYING - microscope stage

I'm on the hunt for a microscope stage to use as the base for my stacking rig, something like an old Nikon Optiphot or similar. So any old microscope with broken optics, or simply no optics left, would do fine - I just want the mounting head with the RMS threads and the focusing rail to be intact. I...

yes, the ribbed "screw" on the left ocular is the diopter, as long as the oculars are level with each other (horizontally) you'll be fine

Yes, it belongs to the Auchenorrhyncha, for sure, but its a nymph so its a bit hard to tell exactly where it belongs. I think I can make out some carinae between the eyes, so maybe the family Delphacidae?

I would be a bit careful with these products, although I might just have been unlucky when it comes to mine. I dont actually have the fine focus block version, but the coarse one that shipped together with a Olympus stereomicroscope I got on Ebay. The white stand and the moving aluminium focus block...
