Oh and I still maintain that it is spatial filtering: The aperture may not be at the proper fourier plane but it has the same effect. Cutting out diffracted orders is filtering and it is done in space not time hence spatial filtering. To say it is caused by diffraction in the way you do is the same ...

Will, The objective has a certain NA and hence a certain resolving power and you are correct that this is not necessarily the resolution you will get at the image plane, the resolution at the image plane comes down to the system NA. Typically you may have a high NA objective and a low NA tube lens f...

Thanks Graham that puts it more clearly than I did, I did rather go off on one talking about angular spectrum.

I might of got the wrong end of the stick when it comes to where diffraction is considered the main issue but as far as I know the spot size in an image is proportional the the NA of the imaging system (1/f), if you stop down then you reduce the NA and the resolution but this is just the manifestati...

I've done similar things in other fields, you give up on something only to return to it when you are older and wiser and find that you can make it work, a bitter-sweet feeling. As a kid I had all the time in the world and no know how, now it is the other way around (well not quite all the know how i...

c-mount to SLR

I'm using a 1.5M pixel c-mount Sony Firewire camera for my experiments at the moment, I don't think using an SLR would do anything for my resolution (suspect similar pixel size?) but I might be able to increase the field of view somewhat so I am considering it. I have adapters that allow Nikon lense...

Is is possible to add multiple copies of the image that includes the tip of the wing to the stack so increasing the weighting and perhaps enhancing the result? I don't really know anything about the process, only what I have imagined.

After some searching I found this software that looks just the ticket and will produce flash object movies as well as quicktime.

Just need to work out the mechanics.

Thanks, it really helps knowing the correct name for things, I'm getting much further with my searches. Thinking about it further, as each image I take will always contain the entire area of interest all I need to do is find a satifactory way of displaying the images. For a single axis cylindrical i...

Inverted panoramas

I have been taking close up pictures of parts of bees and flies for my research into insect flight and one thing I have found very useful is taking a set of pictures from all around a sample, I mount the sample on a stepper motor shaft and sync the rotation and my camera (a 1.5Mpix Sony firewire CCD...

Nice presentation! I'm not familiar with Irwin's pictures but it would seem to me that the average plant surface has a higher surface roughness than an insect's cuticle, this will produce diffuse reflections so you won't get the shaped lines that are seen in reflections on smooth surfaces and help t...

Depending on the subject you may find it easier to move the subject instead of the camera. The subject is likely to be more light and compact. Cameras especially with macro lenses can be on the long and heavy side. The problem with trying to adjust a tripod is that when you turn your adjustment scre...

Hi,

I very much like your ball-joint positioners especially the v-grooves to provide a simple seat for the ball!

I'm a fan of Proxxon having converted the milling machine that uses that table to CNC, they are suprisingly accurate and the 1mm lead provides excellent resolution.

Cheers,

Graham
