Good heavens, I've been staring at diatoms as the main course for a few years now, and this is the first time I've ever seen areolae on Pinnularia depicted, SEM imagery or otherwise!

It's a device that looks a bit like an objective lens, and threads into the nosepiece just like an objective lens.
