Re: Sensor size and depth of field

But isn't binning just averaging four pixels together? (That's the way my monochrome cameras implement binning.) If so, you are showing that noise from individual small pixels averages out when they are combined. I suspect that your method of reducing the resolution of the individual pixels (in the...

Re: EL Nikkor+Fujifilm GFX

I think you still haven't said how you want to use the lens. That's really important to know. Many enlarger lenses are not great at infinity. I tested many of them at infinity and I was usually disappointed. There were a few acceptable ones though. Even these usually required considerable stopping d...

Re: Sensor size and depth of field

"To me the Sensor+ image is much cleaner and more homogenous, far fewer yellow spots/patches and the edges were much better - that and the increased dynamic range were pretty good reasons so use it at/beyond ISO400. And as I said, no noise reduction is applied." But this supports my main point: fou...

Re: Sensor size and depth of field

... EDIT: for me the most striking examples were the hardware-based pixel binning CCD sensors made by DALSA. There was a clear difference in noise profile and dynamic range between the "full res" images and the ones made using pixel binning, even when comparing both at the same (lower) resolution (...

Re: Sensor size and depth of field

"For me it's very difficult to avoid talking about diffraction without mentioning pixel size" I have the opposite perspective. Smaller pixel size does nothing to increase the effect of diffraction on the final displayed image, if camera settings, degree of final enlargement, and viewing distance ar...

Re: AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2x-5x full-frame macro lens

I've been doing some tests of my own copy of the Laowa 2.5x-5x on full frame using a B+W test wafer. In general they confirm what Lothman found. At 5x, the lens really is sharpest at f/2.8, fully open. This is an amazing feat for any lens. However there is some dark purple lateral CA at this apertur...

I hadn't realized there were pelagic fishing bats. Very cool. We had big fishing bats in freshwater Amazonian lakes. Amazing how they could catch fish in the dark.

Re: Mitutoyo 10x 0.42 M Plan APO HR lens adventure

Very sad Robert. As you know, this happens a lot, and not just on eBay. B&H Photo used to do an exemplary job of packing when I was starting out in photography, but over the last ten years their packing has been criminal. Often a single shoot of bubble wrap only large enough to protect one side of t...

Re: AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2x-5x full-frame macro lens

P.S.: I cannot tell often enough that "my" wafer produces some reflection at corners whent enlightened flat - then everybody screams about CA - sorry for that. May be I should delete all these pics because they can be misleading. Please just judge resolution not colors. I think these are very infor...

Re: AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2x-5x full-frame macro lens

FotoChris, that's a good point about this lens being closer to f/4 than f/2.8. That would explain the issue I raised above about Lothman's puzzling test results showing the lens was sharpest wide open yet still blurrier than the Laowa at f/4. Accurate measurements of their exit pupils would be evide...
