Re: Butterfly wing scales @50x, NA 0.8

Hello Steve, Excellent photo, great lens! BTW, can you tell me more about your 65W COB LED? Best, ADi Thanks ADi, It's an Amaran 60D, used "naked" (no reflector). Plenty of info available online, it's a very popular little lamp. There are many others like it, but I particularly like this one for it...

Butterfly wing scales @50x, NA 0.8 (link added)

Here's a 100-image stack shot with a Nikon TU PlanAPO 50/0.8 on a Raynox DCR 150 tube lens (FL 208mm). The image is a heavy crop of about 1:2.5 (1 pixel on screen = 2.5 pixels from the FF source image). The objective working distance is 2mm which usually makes lighting somewhat "challenging", but I ...

My lawn is loving the rain

I can't remember when we last had a rain-free day. It seems like months ago! The ground is so soggy I haven't been able to mow the lawns at all yet (this year). The grass certainly likes it though - it flowered already. Stacked with a 5x Mitty on a Raynox DCR250 (3.125x). No retouching. The square c...

Re: Corydalis cava (Hohler Lerchensporn)

That's a nice vibrant set. I really like the close-ups that show individual cells. I put the cut end of stems in a small (3-5ml) centrifuge tube and stuff it with wet paper towel. That seems to stop the wilting, but growing (or re-hydrating) can then present a problem instead. On the bright side tho...

Re: Diatoms: macro style

These are remarkable. Did you use 365nm light? Thanks Lou Nope, just an Amaran 60d - a compact 65W daylight COB studio lamp - shining directly into the back of my old dome/ping-pong ball diffuser. And a little bit of frequency separation sharpening in post Diffuser is described here https://www.pho...

Re: Diatoms: macro style

Thanks both, kinda. Demanding beggars, ain'tcha!? :D So now I have to admit that the forms were more widely separated in reality and I moved them closer together in post. <blush> I also note "tilted back 35-40 degrees", so of course I would love to see stereo. <insert begging puppy emoticon h...

Diatoms: macro style

A pleasing outcome from a test shot (after significant modding of my macro setup - another story). Shot with a 20x Mitutoyo M Plan APO on a Raynox DCR250 for 12.5x on sensor. I was really surprised to get such clear detail from this, albeit with very heavy cropping. The diatoms were stuck face up on...

That is, diatoms still buried in a tiny crumb of diatomite from Newport Bay, CA SMB00017--pmn.jpg Here's a close up focus stack from the centre of the crumb. Tragic news. I only ever interacted with Robert on this forum, but will still remember him as a friend. Always so affable and generous with his knowledge. He will be sorely missed. Beats.

Re: Diatoms - Didysmophenia geminata and Gomphonema sp.

Spectacular, as always. These images are very useful in helping "interpret" what I see optically too. The inside/outside differences in Didymosphenia (aka Rock Snot) are near impossible to separate with transmitted illumination, even using UV (you see both overlaid). But after seeing the SEM version...

...I have several brands of clean cotton pads and such that I sometimes use instead of Qtips, but I still check for residues since I found some that claim they leave no residues or lint or anything but they really did. Agreed! "Lint and residue free" too often means you simply weren't charged for t...

Re: Safe objective cleaning solution -- so much conflicting info online?

Salt helps to break down grease. A key constituent of many old (traditional) grease removal methods. It has caused a few to hyperventilate on seeing it in the recipe though :D But if applied as per the instructions - dampen (don't wet) a cloth and clean with that, then polish with a separate dry clo...
