Andrew, i am playing with the same type of lighting and have found good results by roughing up the outside of the cube and polishing the inside hole to be as clear as glass Diffraction takes place at the outside acrylic/air boundary further away from the subject and increase the apparent diffuser si...

Mantis or wasp ?
I think neither a mantis nor a wasp, but a member of the family Mantispidae (order: Neuroptera).

Rusty, thanks for the photo's of your "rig". You achieve really good results with this setup. I like the way you made the reflective chamber (the collar on the left) Doesn't the red perspex disk on top make your photo's "reddish" by its reflection, and how do you trigger a manual flash? The inside ...

Re: The dreaded black hole & window shopping, a theory

Ever tried looking into a shop window when it is brighter outside than inside? all you see is a reflection of the outside world Exactly the experience I had when I put aside my film camera and borrowed my wife's compact digital camera. I found out exactly why they call it a "compact": after those l...

Finally why bother when there is already an easy answer? Use a polarized filter on both lens and a flash. Angle them at 90 degrees. There will be no reflection. The beetle will photograph as if it was not shiny.
Darn!.....Think i will go and eat that beetle now !! :D :D :D

I wonder if you can take some shots of your basic small bench top rig. I'm very interested in gears/setups/constructions and what fellow members use to make the photo's that they post. Sometimes I see the most inventive use of materials, like your curved "catadioptric" flash head, which I still can...

Mitch i agree , strangely the stack came out much darker than any of the individual frames. The posted image has been made lighter in ps but is still too dark
I am probably missing an adjustment somewhere
