There is a similar discussion here:- " The 12-bit JPEG format has been part of the JPEG specification for some time, ..... This may force the codec to temporarily use 16-bit bins to hold these." As the notice shown says only 8 bit JPEG's can be processed, could they have been converted to 12bit? No...

Where do the JPEG files come from - are they written by a camera, or by some software? If the latter, what options were used to save them?

These are really lovely, crisp detailed shots.

For the one on the pink leaf, I wonder if a camera with movements to tilt the plane of focus would have been useful?

Re: Bee on thistle (studio stack)

Here it is used at 1x as near as I can judge. The easy way to measure scale is after you're done photographing your real subject, swap in a ruler, focus that without changing the optics, and take one more picture. I wasn't far out. Photograph-the-ruler gave me a magnification of 1.07 ...hot pixels....

The one thing I think that I need to consider is a better quality objective/s, a 4x and a 10x. I've been looking at various Nikon objectives, but the nomeclature completely baffles me, there just seems to be so many variations. So given a choice and not looking at going stupid with prices, what sho...

My stackshot arrived today (yay!) after spending ten days in Customs (sigh). So far all I can say is that it appears well made, came with good quality and easily replaceable cables (mono RCA for shutter, low impedance SVideo for control) and the control unit looks comprehensive. The base of the unit...

Chris, this is looking good. I see a couple of foreground leaves OOF, and some motion echos at lower right, but the bulk of the image appears clean. Are you seeing some other artifacts at higher resolution that I am missing here on the web? The image is posted here at 1k, but links to the flickr pa...

Sticky William (handheld field stack)

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4071/4668035059_f4cc38939c_b.jpg Short field stack of 8 handheld images, taken in 'macro wind' in the Var estuary, France. Plant is "Sticky Willy" ( Galium aparine ). Result is not at all good, but I felt I should post something . I was using a Nikon D90, Micro-Nikkor...

Klaus, I would be interested to see your adapter and also to hear your thoughts on the lens once you have tried it out.

My JML has just arrived. It has the alignment scratch (as others have noted) and also a small, 1mm scratch on the front coating :(

Re-reading this thread with interest, therefore.

I suspect the scratches might mean they were rejects from some specific project. Mine has other dings on the mounting lip area as well and the long scratches could only mark rotation, which shouldn't matter for whatever use. Some machine vision lenses are rotatable and have a locking screw to fix t...

The problem is not resolution, it's a classic visibility error applied at small scale. What happens is that a chunk of bristle is sharply focused at one depth, the facet behind it is sharply focused at a significantly different depth, and the contrast of the facet is much greater than the contrast ...
