White tailed spider eating another spider
I thought I took a little photo of this spider having dinner. The menu tonight is a favourite for White tailed, a black house spider. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/538_testwhitetail_1.jpg Those aren't artifacts on the spider, it really is a filthy little bugger. No wonder it has a ba...

Colour me dense but if you move the subject closer to the lens, doesn't it make the subject bigger? @Craig Thanks for all the links and those setups just seem so out-of-this-world. It's gonna take me a while to get setups like those. In the mean time, do you have any idea for a much more compact set...

Sorry I can't paint a more promising picture. I've been mounting bugs for over 40 years now, photographing them for almost that long, and I still haven't found any ways better than what I've mentioned here. -------------- On the bright side, let me say that the test image you've posted here is exce...

Cricket first stack tests and some questions.
Hello again all. After checking out Augusthouse's links to stacking intro, I decided to give it a go. I ran into a few problems and I'd like to ask a few questions if I may. First of all, here's the result of the stacking test I did. I used Combined ZM, 25x12MP photos, f/8 and 8" shutter, Do Soft St...

Judging by the eye arrangement, body shape and messy web, I'd say that's a type of Widow spider genus Latrodectus. It could be a Red Widow spider. I'm afraid that's as close an ID as I can do. These spiders are very hardy and can survive without food for months. It's quite possible that this spider ...

Here's a new test I did earlier today. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/538_test1_1.jpg As you can see, the difference in DOF is negligible while it pretty much doubled the shutter time. There's also a problem of fuzziness in the photo. It's almost unnoticeable between f/8 and f/11, but...

Thank you so much for the welcome and suggestions!! The first two spiders only show themselves at night and unfortunately, I don't have those special ring flash for macro. Thing is when I tried using internal flash, the highlight is very harsh on the spider and it creates very strong shadow. Will th...
