Joyful , there is another method, which is close to one rjlittlefield just suggested. Using freeware GIMP editor and Wavelet decomposition plugin, you can split your image into several planes (layers), representing different size of details - 1px, 2px, 4px and so on. You can examine them individual...

White LEDs, trottled down to barely glowing state by limiting current, usually have awful color characteristics, not even close to ones at full or a bit limited brightness because yellow luminophore doesn't receive enough blue light for excitation. Using ND filters or aperture do not have this disad...

tatler56, could you, please, provide more information. - part number or series of your LED - what kind of power source are you going to use? (high voltage wall socket, batteries, low voltage DC or AC) is it important to use this type? - what's the goal of dimming it to zero? (which is not always pos...

lothman,

The one from the first link, 11" long, works fine, but somehow only the shorter version has flats for wrench head on its end pieces.

TheLostVertex, thank you - it does exactly what I needed for the beginning. It's a great estimation tool.

Noga brand is still, probably, the most known and reliable. They also started making dedicated arms for photo/video. But these are quite expensive. Cheaper noname arms could be good enough and ten times less expensive. However they have more or less significant flaws. You can take a look at my photo...

Design of collimated light source optical system

Hi, I'm highly interested in improving the design of LED light sources I'm making to be able to get smaller loss of light, better control over the light beam etc. But my knowledge of optics is a kind of more theoretical and a bit limited. I know, that some people here have long experience with optic...

Square one or the other with two "ears", where bearing axis is perpendicular to mounting flange plane. These are properly called "flange mount bearing blocks" in opposite to "base mount", by the way. I'd obtain the heatsink first to be able to measure it (unfortunately, I didn't) and pick matching b...

I can confirm that.
In this case, it's better to stop using this power supply before it will blow up damaging other components and bring it to some electronics repair shop to replace capacitors.

Chris, this heatsink is a kind of special - it has several threaded holes on its pad. So, you can easily bolt anything to it, unlike in case of many other heatsinks. To attach optical fiber there, I'd try using factory made bearing block with properly sized hole. But amount of heat emitted by LED co...

I don't mind publishing the full part list, but certain parts such as 12V power supply, fan speed controller and so on are not something that should be exactly the same. Wires I used are on the list. Only one "extra" wire came from 12V power supply, I just reused it. Indeed, 40W LED can probably wor...

You are welcome, zzffnn. Thank you for testimonials. Chris, I don't have other photos of LED mounted onto heatsink pad, but setup is pretty simple. Heatsink is CoolerMaster Hyper TX3. It comes with fan, attached to it. It also has four "legs" to be fastened to its pad by screws - that's a standard C...

40W white LED light for microscopy

Hi, I want to share another build I completed recently. One of forum members asked me, if I can make more powerful LED light source, suitable for his task: shooting videos of Caenomorpha sp. and other microscopic aquatic life. 30x and higher magnification videos obviously require much more light tha...
