That sounds like a very interesting discussion point. I wonder if it is red-specific or might the pink varieties show a similar, or partial effect. Here is some discussion: http://neilvn.com/forum/discussion/318/blown-highlights-especially-reds-when-photographing-flowers/p1 http://www.uglyhedgehog.c...

Thanks, Roy. I have not noticed any particular problem with reds. (Blue flowers such as Bluebells are notoriously difficult). I have taken thousands of cactus photos on reversal film but rather few on digital. It may be that reflections from sunlight, my usual source for cactus flowers, may reflect ...

One of my favourite colour combinations. Together with the texture, it reminds me of an exotic ice cream.

I returned to exactly the same location this morning. The weather was fine and sunny, but a bit breezey, as I set off. However, at the lakeside, the onshore breeze had over half a mile (1km) of open lake along which to pick up speed. The vegetation was being shaken vigorously, and there was no sign ...

Alderfly Sialis lutaria

As with Alder trees, you can find these at waterside and other places with somewhat boggy soil in late spring and early summer. They are abundant right now in England. They tend to be fairly inactive on low vegetation. Thus, they make a good subject for novices. However, beiing rather three-dimensio...

Ernie, I share your difficulties. The only effective strategy is to shoot a lot of frames and keep the best. Even with flash, the finger pressure on the release button can shift the camera slightly before the flash fires. One small tip is that holding your breath after breathing out gives steadier h...

Excellent isolation of the main subject by selective soft focus.

Unlike meadow flowers, these species require the ground to be disturbed annually to allow seed germination. They used to be common in cereal fields before the widespread use of selective herbicides.

I have tried converting the ORF to TIFF, processing the TIFF and then converting the TIFF to JPEG and have posted two version of the image here:

I would not claim to have matched the processing exactly for JPEG and TIFF.

Thanks, Ian. Poppies are some of the most photogenic flowers. Using flash in daylight permits (with my setup requires) low ISO and small apertures. In still weather, using daylight exposure, I can easily see the noise in the image when reviewing it on the camera screen where a similar aperture is us...
