As an IT-guy, I appreciate images like these and I never thought of getting them under the lens.
In fact I just pried open two disks and mine look totally different, a wonder of fine mechanics.
3 platters 6 heads so yours had a capacity of at least 1Tb?

A seed pod, but still searching for an ID.....
I often saw them and wondered where they came from.
Had them under the stereo a couple of times, about 4mm I guess.

EDIT: your 'myth explode' post gave away the size: slightly lager than 3mm.

EDIT 2: Is it the seed pod from a Birch?
