Hi Graham, Have you checked the CA when you use the KPL in conjunction with the 63x Zeiss you have mounted? Conversely, have you tried any Periplan eyepieces with your set of Leitz or Leica objectives - I may have some kicking around if you need one to try (I may even have a 6x, but I'll have to che...

I would like to add my two cents that the reason I bought a Canon 500D over a Nikon D5000 was that the remote capture software (EOS utility) is included for free. It works very well and I'm happy I didn't have to spend the extra $100+ for the Nikon remote capture.

I'm pretty sure the "N" stands for "normal". NPL objectives are semi-plan objectives and are corrected for a flat field over the "normal" field of view (ie the field observed by the camera).

Thanks all for your kind words. This scope is certainly a fun toy to work with and I wish (as we all do) that I had more time to be on it. For several years, I fought with older scopes that came with many optical and mechanical difficulties and produced less-than-satisfactory results. Being the cons...

Ciliate identification

This ciliate came from a river water sample that has gotten quite stagnant. Every time I think I get close to an ID, I find a character that doesn't fit. Anyone have any thoughts? The YouTube video takes a while to load, but I think it showcases the HD video feature of the 500D very well. http://www...

This little guy was munching on my basil - I believe it to be Graphocephala coccinea. Zeiss Fluar 2.5x/0.12, 67 images at 25 µm stacked with Zerne Stacker.

Bruchidius villosus and Hoverfly

I recently purchased a new camera dedicated for the microscope and thought I would share a few of the first images taken with this setup. I replaced the Nikon D70 with a Canon 500D and am very happy with the decision. I am using the EOS Utility remote viewing and capture capability in conjunction wi...

Hi Andrew, The lighting and image looks great! Just out of curiosity, how did you wire the Cree MC-E? I just bought one of these and will be using a 700 mA buckpuck driver with a variable potentiometer to dim it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I won't fry this $30 diode  . Regards, Chris

The "snake" is actually a bacterium - part of a group known as spirochaetes. A google search will provide you with more information regarding these organisms.

Closterium and Conochilus

I haven't been doing much "leisure microscopy" recently, but a lively sample from a local swamp gave me plenty to look at tonight. Here are a couple from this set. My apologies for not applying scale bars; I scaled the images to fit within the forum guidelines and didn't save the unscaled originals ...

Freshwater copepod

This little one just barely fit in the FOV of my 10x objective - I'm kinda bummed that the caudal setae are cut off :x . The image is a stack and has been cleaned up to remove halos and other detritus in the field. Artificially too clean IMO, but it makes the subject stand out. EC Plan-Neofluar 10x ...

Chaetonotus gastrotrich

I had a swamp water sample that was loaded with these guys, so I spent some time photographing them. I got as far as the genus Chaetonotus , but didn't attempt a species-level ID. My apologies there's no scale bar; I'll add this later. Plan-Apochromat 63x/1.4 DIC, Nikon D70 http://img.photobucket.co...
