I had not considered Allophane..but the coating appears fibrous, though at the edge of resolution.

Unfortunately I don't know the locality. It is from a mostly unlabeled collection :(

Brochantite

Brochantite with Malachite on an unknown white mineral Stacked at 6.75X Conventional diffused lighting FOV 2.7mm Interestingly, the bluish white mineral appears to have formed casts or coating over some earlier tabular mineral..from the shape one might suspect Wulfenite. http://www.photomacrography....

Beautiful image and specimen!

Is it self collected?

I see what you mean Pau, maybe I can find a compromise with better contrast.

As this was a test, I didn't worry too much about shadows. In any case I'm quite pleased with the improvement in color, and also the reduction in stacking halos. Thanks to all for the comments.

Rik: Thanks for the input.

Pau: I'm very surprised you prefer the first image! As a color loving mineral guy I really dislike that one. The cuprite looks much better than that under a scope, though it does exhibit more reflections than the second image.

Cuprite and cross polarization

The following Cuprite specimen had proven unusually difficult to photograph. For some background, Cuprite has a refractive index of 2.8 which is even higher than Diamond at 2.4. Diffuse lighting does reduce the intensity of specular reflections, but also results in partial reflections which obscure ...

Hi Soldevilla,

Nice clear images and good color..You didn't identify the minerals so I will guess Calcite, Cinnabar, and Pyromorphite?

Thanks Scarodactyl and GreenSugar!

As yet I have no polarization pointers to share for minerals, but hope to do some testing soon.

Agate

For something different...here I was testing a new 5X Mitutoyo objective with a very shallow stack. Subject is a flat slab of translucent agate. Lighting is from non-diffused LED lamps. FOV 4.4mm. Based on the detail present on some other posted images I get the feeling my downsizing could be done a...

At times it does seem impossible to achieve the desired results with certain minerals.

Rik: I will play around with your idea and see how it goes..Thanks.
