Re: Raynox dcr150 custom tube lens

I am curious about the motivation for custom design & build.

Why not just assemble a flocked tube from standard parts, for example as in viewtopic.php?t=35350 ?

Re: mountain swallowtail

best method (Lanczos3, Lanczos8, etc.) to interpolate the blue scales? At 50X NA 0.55, you're running at effective aperture f/45 (=50/(2*0.55)). Even for extreme blue wavelength 400 nm, that still puts the diffraction cutoff frequency at 18.2 microns per cycle. Against that, your camera has a senso...

Re: Sea Urchin Spines SEM

Very nice!

I'm curious, what sort of preparation did these have to go through, in order to be imaged?

Re: Windows of Papilio ulysses wing scale

I notice that one of the earlier links is now dead (https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/12825066.pdf). But I found what I think is the same reference, via https://www.researchgate.net/publication/5495569_Sculpted-multilayer_optical_effects_in_two_species_of_Papilio_butterfly . The RIS citation and abstr...

Re: Cobweb on glass, with spider foot for scale

In web building spiders, its the females that seem to be stay-at-homes in their webs while males are seen either a-wandering, or living dangerously in the web of a female or in a small satellite web next to the females' web (that is seen in garden spiders. Its an interesting behavior). I don't know...

Re: Edges of the stacked image is distorted

Adding to Scarodactyl's explanation... These cross-shaped patterns are typical of what happens when (1) the lens has astigmatism in the corners, and (2) you stack using one of the "pyramid" methods, like PMax in Zerene Stacker or Method C in Helicon Focus. They happen because the astigmatism causes ...

Re: Rodenstock Scitex LFOV 108mm f/5.6 Lens Test Results

Something else interesting, the forum supposedly has a 300k limit to upload inline photos but I had to save the file above at quality 29 and 100k, otherwise the forum upload feature would not accept it :-k A problem something like that was reported a long time ago. That one was an interaction betwe...

Re: Cobweb on glass, with spider foot for scale

Perhaps the concentrated spots are where it attaches web directly to the glass with its spinnerets. Yes, I believe that's correct. Pads like that are the only places where the web seems actually attached to the glass. I did a brief search for more detailed information on this aspect, but not much t...

Re: Questions about using a YN568EX III flash unit for photomicroscopy

tjlmicro, welcome aboard! Yes, a sync cord from camera hot shoe to flash should solve your problems. The exact units that I have are no longer sold, but anything with a compatible pinout should work OK. This one comes up quickly at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Camera-Flash-Speedlite-Canon/d...

Cobweb on glass, with spider foot for scale

The "False Black Widow" cobweb spider that I show HERE spent long enough in a small glass cage to create some interesting bits of silk. In this stereo pair (crossed-eye, with the glass plane at the back), you can see three pads made of many small strands attached to the glass, with some thicker stra...
