Re: Rio Bigal Reserve: Ecuador

Thanks for the kind words all. Lou - Thanks, not sure of the species. I've got an ID guide of the region I can check when I get back home though. A couple camera traps for those that are interested: Ocelot (Leopardus paralis): https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53593440642_56990a7f9c_b.jpg Jaguar (...

Rio Bigal Reserve: Ecuador

Photos from Rio Bigal Reserve in Ecuador. Elevation is around 1000M. I forgot my extension tube, so I had to back off on the magnification a bit. However, it can sometimes be a good exercise in framing, when forced to choose a wider perspective. All photos taken with Voigtlander 110mm f/2.5 lens. Mi...

Re: Peruvian Amazon: Manu Part III

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

Lou - I'm with you on that, my friend was bitten by one which was tucked into a shower curtain. I tend to get more scorpions than Phoneutrias in my stuff, but I'm always on the lookout for whatever has crawled into my bags or boots.

Re: Peruvian Amazon: Manu Part II

Thanks for the kind words Marc, Pete, and Ramos, most appreciated. Marc - The short answer is that I use an off-shoe photoflex lightdome XS and a 5-in-1 reflector. The longer answer is that I generally employ first principles with respect to light. In practice that means understanding how light will...

Re: Peruvian Amazon: Manu Part I

Mark- Indeed you're quite right, some of these theraphosids have lives spanning 20+ years. It's hard to justify, especially given that I've seen some exceptionally well mounted exoskeleton moults from captive specimens which achieve 90% of the result, without the arachnocide. My main philosophy is t...

Re: Peruvian Amazon: Manu Part I

I had a similar experience only it was a mounted specimen belonging to the father of a childhood friend. It was also right around the time that the movie Arachnophobia came out so it made an impression. Preying on primates is a bit of a stretch, but small birds isn't out of the question. They're not...

Re: Peruvian Amazon: Manu Part I

Thanks Marc and Ramos, much appreciated. Indeed it was stunning to see just how quickly the venom took effect and the lizard was subdued. The crazy thing is that there are spiders 5X this size (Like Theraphosa blondii) which would absolutely dwarf this small skink. https://live.staticflickr.com/6553...

Manu national park: Part V

A panoramic view around the Cocha Cashu biological station in Manu National park reveals the eponymous oxbow lake, as well as the snaking Manu river. Rain on the horizon underlines the turbidity of the water within the river as compared to the lake. The lake itself once formed part of the Manu river...
