Re: Flea beetle sitting with feet in "claws up" position

That flea beetle looks quite like the flea beetles that terrorise oilseed-rape/canola/colza farmers. They are really fantastic creatures; they can jump from the floor onto a wall and nearly every time end up facing the wall so that they can grip onto it :-) The internal mechanics of the jumping mech...

Re: Clamp for macro

Yes; I should say that the 600D and 35mm efs weigh 830 grams together.
I would be fearful about mounting either a full frame dlsr or a 100mm macro onto this setup.
(Not that I have either of them to try).

Clamp for macro

I have been using this thing for a year and it works pretty well for macro and wider shots. Clamp w Arca mount 800.jpg It is simply a generic arca mount attached to a clamp. The clamp can be attached to a horseshoe-style microscope which is then used as the focus rail Clamp attached.jpg The camera t...

Re: The Insect Crisis

Well, it is hopeful that you you have had at least one bash against your screen. I cannot say whether this is still relevent, but G.C.Varley collated and replotted (on a log10 scale) survey data from the German Forest service: Varley 1949 changes in German forest 1024.jpg It sort of highlights the e...

Re: The Insect Crisis

There is quite an interesting paper studying the moth numbers/diversity collected in the (standardised) light trap network run by Rothamsted in the UK:
https://www.rothamsted.ac.uk/news/moths ... -or-cities

(There is a link to the paper at the bottom of the webpage).

Re: Parasitoid

Lou, your expectations are actually correct... I forgot to mention that the picture had Local Contrast Enhancement So it should be 'Old button lens plus LCE' So my description is a bit misleading :^o On the other hand, maybe it is an opportunity to highlight that LCE does brighten up the images from...

Re: Parasitoid

Maybe the one at the top left is not very button-like but the images for the stack were taken with a Cooke-Baker objective much like that (Vickers) one.

Perhaps it is simply the lack of a shroud that make them feel primitive.

Re: Parasitoid

Apologies; 'button-lens' is not a technical term .... it is a (slang?) description for a microscope objective that has the same sort of shape as a clothes button.

Parasitoid

Taken with a button-lens :

It looks to be a single element, so maybe one cannot get an objective more primitive than this :-)

Re: Keeping micro subjects from drying out? (And posing?)

There are some potentially good ideas in this (page 213 Onwards) https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Microscopical_Praxis/3PY4AAAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&pg=PA213&printsec=frontcover I have kept small eggs developing on the raised glass 'table' in a Varley-type live box, putting a drop of water in the ...

Re: How to calculate tube length?

Be aware that the black coating on inside of some of those cone adapters can be very reflective; to get reasonable photographs it might need to be lined with something matt black ; try some black paper or thinnish black EVA craft foam and see if that helps at all.

Re: Why "metallic" colours on some insects?

Maybe they are green to avoid being thermally 'overloaded' . Overloading issues have been suggested as a possible reason why plants are green:

Re: Need a permanent setup!

Netdewt, it might be worth checking the 'Magic Lantern' website periodicaly, as it looks as if someone has started to port the firmware into your model of Canon.
Even though I have it in the 600D I havent really used the focus bracketting routine, so I am not really sure how well it works.

Re: Need a permanent setup!

NetDewt, I also needed something more compact than a tripod and ended up clamping my camera onto a horse-shoe style microscope:
https://www.microbehunter.com/microscop ... 12&t=13031

I feel it works extremely well for 1:1 and larger-than-macro focus stacks.
