Re: Wasp, Nuthin' Fancy

The mandible seem broken to me, and that would be interesting in itself. I often discover abnormalities or impairments in insects that I shoot and have come to believe that is what makes them available as subjects, too weak or exhausted to flee.

Re: Fruit fly

no. It's an inside joke, as in inside my own head. I've been able to discern striations in a number of 7x photos I've taken but not what causes them. When I see higher res images, I learn what's just beyond the horizon of what I'm shooting. I often wonder if others process these things the same way....

Re: Fruit fly

No doubt about it now. The striated setae/bristles are actually grooved.

I enjoyed your Flickr postings ... again.

Re: kitchen ant

Rik, your work is amazing. I LOLed when I saw your candy cane ant 'cause that's exactly what I do with volunteer at home specimen, but not with these results. Further to this, the exterior process is interesting and I believe I've seen a similar structure in midges associated with the wing mechanism...

... did a very rough glue job
But if only we charged more, we would do a much better job!

I couldn't help but imagine that much of the "issues" raised in the review pages were only a care away from being mitigated. LOL Hi Tech meets Real Life.

Re: Unknown True Bug

We definitely could use a dorsal view and ventral might also help. I see some roughness on the shoulder so that makes me suspect "Subfamily Asopinae - Predatory Stink Bugs" (https://bugguide.net/node/view/247812/bgpage). I'm not sure bugguide is very complete on these insects. It's not as though bro...

Re: Scales - pushing the envelope (of my kit)

I think the Papilio sp. ir. scale structure is quite different from the Morpho sp.. In Papilio, the longitudinal ribs are spaced quite wide, maybe 4 μm, while the cuticular membrane is a fine laminae with different species exhibiting iridescence related to the cavities within. In Morpho, the longitu...

Re: Scales - pushing the envelope (of my kit)

The science would suggest you need to resolve the wavelength of light that is reflected. That would put the blue scales beyond the reach of the TU Plan 50X. Maybe the Papilio blumei, a green species, would acheive the results sought (as the specs indicate the objective can resolve 0.5 μm.) Edit: The...
