Re: Polaroid land camera and stand

FWIW, the Polaroid MP4 makes a fine camera/copy stand once the 4x5" Polaroid slider is replaced with either the factory or an easily-made camera holder. One could also easily use it for afocal work above a microscope - separating the camera from the scope to eliminate most vibration. Have no idea if...

Re: Nikon CFN Fluor / Planapo 100 160/0.17

I'd be inclined to say no. While you gain a slight increase in n.a. and resolution, the extra lens elements mean some loss in contrast. And you lose a bit of working distance. Too thick a cover slip and you won't see much beyond it. A 60x Plan Apo, if there's an urge for another fine objective, migh...

Re: USPS Priority Mail Lens Shipments Gone Missing?

The USPS has faced several issues in the past year. A former head who wanted to gut it -- and cut costs and equipment. Exceptional package volume due to Covid. Employees sick with Covid or facing quarantine - replaced by clueless temps just making up or ignoring tracking information. Plus the weathe...

Re: Nikon Small World Event - Wistar Institute

My thanks as well. Just to echo zzffnn's point about the artistic side -- innovation and discovery very often emerge from a mash up of different viewpoints and disciplines. We talk of "thinking outside the box" -- and that box might as well be a confocal scope as anything. The greatest value of tech...

Re: Abalone shell

I've talked to several photographers (we live in a county chock full of both artists and scientists) who want to start taking pictures through a microscope. After a bit of discussion, I've often heard them say something to the effect that "Charles Krebs is my inspiration."

Re: Olympus BH-2 (BHS) LED Conversion

Phil, Retrodiode makes a decent LED conversion - and it would make good sense if, for example, your BHS power supply had failed. However, the 100 watt tungsten halogen lamp you have will be brighter and have a more even spectrum than a 10 watt LED with a decent but not spectacular CRI. It might make...

Re: Can someone tell me the difference between these two Nikon apos?

The silver one is fairly old - I believe before the "chrome free" era. Still likely of excellent quality but may require some compensation in the eyepiece.

The "genuine" black painted one isn't one I'm familiar with as a Nikon.

Re: Advice please: High NA air objective with small WD

Many reflected microscopes offer a darkfield option. It won't help, of course, with an objective not intended for darkfield (with an illumination cone surrounding the objective). But it might be a way of getting images from an alternative high NA dry objective -- with less of that flat "deer in the ...

Re: Monochromatic Microscopes?

One might argue that a SEM is a microscope designed from the ground up to be monochromatic . . . and achieves incredible resolution as a result. So, it's been done, sort of. As for light microscopes in the visual range, while there's a slight gain in resolution, the loss of color is a pretty big dea...

Re: Insert for the Olympus phase condenser

Hi Saul - I have that condenser and would by happy to give it a try. PM me if you don't already have one on offer. A few of our "Micronauts" might find this of interest as well. FWIW, the ID from under the condenser measures around 34.08mm. The plastic spring tabs will need to reach out a bit (or th...

Re: microscope reccommendations

I'll second the opinions above. The Optiphot is a fine scope - better than the CH2 and better (brigher lamp) than the 20 watt BH2's and essentially near (Optiphot 1) or equivalent (Optiphot 2) to Olympus BHS (assuming your fine focus is OK - easily repaired if not). An F type Nikon trinocular head w...
