Given the color of the background, a 1/4 Lambda plate was used. A Lambda plate would produce a bright magenta background-color. When I say a Lambda, I really mean a home made phase plate out of plastic. I also rotated the top polarizer slightly as it transitioned from magenta to green and found a m...

Nice photos . This strain birefringence is normal in diamonds. How big are these crystals? Diamonds are one of my favorite minerals to look at. In particular, their surfaces can be quite spectacular using epi DIC microscopy. Nathan, they are about 0.5 mm across This example is a flatter crystal htt...

Natural diamonds, cross polarized light (black diamond add)
I was very surprised by the intensity of the birefringence in these natural micro diamond crystals. The colours could only be seen with an extra lambda plate. All images were focus stacks using an Olympus S-plan Apo 10x except for the stereograms which were S-plan 4x. http://www.photomacrography.net...

Quartz crystal with petroleum inclusions
I love these petroleum enhydros quartz crystals. They contain inclusions of petroleum liquid, bitumen and bubbles of methane gas. The first imaged used an Olympus Splan Fl 2x, the second, an Olympus Splan 4x. Both were lit with dark field ring lighting in combination with cross polarized light. The ...
