Re: 20X Objective Quest

I have had one mitutoyo clone which had an image that was noticeably warm. It seems to be the result of delamination in that case.

Re: 42 or 58 diameter tubes

It is awfully hard to beat the low price point on generic m42 spacers, adapters and helicoids.

Indonesian amber is still delightfully fragrant when ground or heated.

Re: How much would a decent DIC microscope setup with Plan Fluors cost in Australia?

Someone just posted some photos taken on a Nexscope DIC system (probably the same as bestscope) on the amateur microscopy group on facebook, and they looked quite good to me (at least within the bounds of web resolution shots). Re: Diatoms in epi DIC

Here's a shot with my 40x/1.0 water immersion objective, which definitely has better resolution, and not just because of the higher NA--because of the splitting and separation of the two images before recombination epi DIC kind of puts its own separate limits on pushing up magnification above the pr...

Re: Diatoms in epi DIC

I appreciate that! I doesn't hold a candle to your results with transmitted DIC but it will benefit from further experimentation. Thanks for the tips! That should be a fun project, though I need to clear off what's already on my plate first. Just to be clear, this is one of the cheap normal label 20...

Diatoms in epi DIC

I recently bought a couple slides from Diatom Lab so I'd have a good subject to look at in a future (likely futile) project of diy transmitted DIC. I've been having fun with these, looking at them with my new Leica "Rottermann contrast" base (which is basically a tunable oblique system for low magni...

Re: 20X Objective Quest

Mitutoyos aren't that bad if you really park eBay and watch for deals, and are also willing to return one if it's not good. The 20x is an awfully good objective.
I'd love to see results of that 20x test--sounds like an odyssey.

Re: 20X Objective Quest

Lu plans are reputedly good but have notable axial CA. The mitutoyo 20x doesn't. On the other hand nikon lenses seem more durable than mitutoyos--I recently got a tu plan fluor 50x cheap with scratches and dings on the barrel but it still works great.

Re: 180mm ED Nikkor 2.8 as tube lens?

It really depends how much working distance you need for your illumination. Nikon doesn't really make objectives in mitutoyo's niche (with a few minor exceptions), nothing with the combination of color correction, working distance and large field coverage. But if you don't need gigantic field covera...

Re: Mity 20x NUV usability?

It's probably going to be worse corrected for visible light than a normal 20x, with lower resolution and shorter wd. But I imagine it would still be an above average objective.

Re: 100-125mm TL for Mitutoyo to cover FF sensor?

I know there was some success using them on medium format, though even in the best case the corners were not very good.
