Very nice! Looks like good crisp results with the DIC.

Re: Abbreviations for equipment and technicues

Google doesn't own pinterest or reddit, their algorithm is just dumb.
The issues finding stuff on photomacrography via google are pretty unusual. I have not run into this when trying to search any other site.

Re: Fedex and the Lost Inspec.x L Float Lens Saga

Fortunately not, though Xometry did offer to replace it--unlike nice optics it wasn't too worrying since I knew a solid chunk of aluminum wouldn't care much about humidity or shock or temperature even if it took the long routr. But it was a funny situation and points to some weird trouble at fedex.

Re: Fedex and the Lost Inspec.x L Float Lens Saga

I had a custom adapter machined for my microscope a month or so back. It was shipped slow via fedex and was almost a week late when it was marked as delivered--but when I went out there was no package. I checked my security camera and saw the fedex guy had driven down my street, turned around and dr...

Re: Reflected Light - Optiphot Series

No lenses are needed. The reason that the finite nikon metallurgical objectives are 210mm rather than 160mm is to cover the extra 50mm of space the illuminator provides. What you need to look out for is the polarizer and analyzer. The best option has a rotatable polarizer with a separate quarter wav...

The nikon mount is m26x0.75, sometimes it matters and sometimes it doesn't.

Re: The new bargain: PL M 100 / 0.90 ∞

I just played around with my own 100x/0.9 a bit (a shucked Olympus m fluorite bd), and I think I understand it now. Coaxial illumination gives a usable image but lighting it from the side, even with the relatively accessible front element post-shucking which looks similar to the Union one, gives a v...

Re: The new bargain: PL M 100 / 0.90 ∞

The latest test photo looks like it has some very coarse noise (maybe with post processing on top of it?) giving it an odd texture across the image and the colors look a bit odd as well. That has to be something in the camera or post processing.

Re: The new bargain: PL M 100 / 0.90 ∞

I am going to go out on a limb and guess the noise in this and the first image in the thread were not caused by lighting issues or high NAs.

Re: Optical system in AZ100 Microscope?

If you're thinking about using them directly for macro work sans zoom body there have been a few threads about them here. There doesn't seem to be a solution that gives the results people are looking for from a 4x/0.4 but on the zoom body it's a nice system for its intended purpose.

Re: Optical system in AZ100 Microscope?

These can also be hooked up to the Leica Z series with some reported success, though I have not tried it or seen any example photos. Iirc RAFcamera sells an adapter for this purpose.

Re: Optical system in AZ100 Microscope?

You can safely assume pretty much any high end modular microscope from this century is infinity corrected. That's been true of stereo microscopes and photomacroscopes (like this one) for longer, with at least most systems being infinity corrected since the 70s or so. If you're thinking about a photo...

Re: G Plan Apo 20x vs M Plan Apo 20x

A comparison to the 10x would definitely have been beneficial and I should have thought of that. I spent some time with my 10x trying to find these particular inclusions again but it is a very big and deep crystal with a lot of stuff inside so I gave up. From working with the G plan apo image qualit...

Re: What even is this: Plan Apo 40x/1.0 W infinity f=180 unbranded m25 75mm long

Thanks! I wouldn't really claim to know what I'm doing, but it does slot in nicely for a lot of my favorite subjects. Yeah, the Olymlus XLUM 20x/1.0 is just over 9k from Thorlabs, not cheap but far from the most expensive lenses you've handled. There's also a very intriguing Nikon water immersion pl...

Re: What even is this: Plan Apo 40x/1.0 W infinity f=180 unbranded m25 75mm long

I've used this objective a few times now for looking at very small gem inclusions and really liked it--the water immersion is just wonderful for cutting down reflections from the stone surface in coaxial illumination and I can see details I've never seen before. But that isn't a very formal test, an...
