Re: Awakening a Leitz SM microscope

The brightfield images look nice and clean. I like it! Forum member Saul sells various inserts on his ebay store, they are designed to be inserted into the condenser's rear opening. It's fun to use and smartly crafted, utilising magnets. Various darkfield rings, Rheinberg Illumination, oblique light...

Re: Awakening a Leitz SM microscope

A very nice piece of engineering. if my setup is really "competitive" with much more modern infinity microscopes in terms of image quality (resolution, optical aberrations...) Depends on your definition of competitive. It will for sure produce very nice images, however due to its age, modern objecti...

Edmund Optics Techspec High Contrast Linear Polariser Film

This seems to be new, from EO: https://www.edmundoptics.com/f/high-contrast-linear-polarizing-film/14385/ 9000:1 extinction ratio. EO's glass ones are 10,000:1. I have their 50mm and 25mm ones, quality is excellent. The film ones are way cheaper, with a working temperature of -40C to 80C, these can ...

Interesting Diatoms

Two diatoms found in a prepared strew slide. 100x objective mag, direct projection https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50645554627_552c318aaa_h.jpg More info here: https://flic.kr/p/2kanGVH An ID would be great! Triangular one might be of the Triceratium or Trigonium genus? Would be great to have an...

Re: Which Canon EOS to choose for stacking?

Have you considered something used? A used EOS R might be a good choice, they aren't too expensive nowadays.

Re: 40-60 X Objective lens

I have a similar looking 10x branded Edmund Optics, it too has a pastic back cap that says Japan on it. It might be alright, it's a 160mm finite objective. Never tried mine, bought it because it was $5.

Re: Reichert METAPLAN microscope

Yeah, for $550 that's a steal. Try $500 with the seller :P You get a handful of fluors, the NA and magnification tells me it's similar to mitutoyo ones with regards to working distance, besides that 100x which might have a WD of 2mm. With the right DIY, you should be able to turn the frame into a tr...

Re: Looking for complete BH2 "UCD" DIC set

I've tried to mismatch prisms and so far the results aren't too good, there's a ton of weirdness. I want to write about it but I don't know a good approach. Some combinations may work, it's all a matter of trying and seeing the results.

Re: Looking for complete BH2 "UCD" DIC set

I have the U-UCD which is the same as a BH2-UCD and will fit the prisms you've listed. PM me if interested. FYI: The BH2-UCD will also fit UIS/UIS2 prisms designed for modern BX scopes. There's no difference. However, the U-UCDB and U-UCD8 etc allows the top lens to be swapped and polariser to be di...

Twisty diatom and [perhaps] silicoflagellate

"Suriella spiralis", said to also be a bioindicator, from Italy. 100x, DIC. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50617170687_b3962301f6_h.jpg In a strew slide I received, I think it's freshwater fossil diatoms from Germany, I found this spiky thingy. 100x, brightfield. https://live.staticflickr.com/6...

Re: Microscope Recommendation + Fitting

I personally think the budget is too low to work with, at least for something local. At 400 pounds, you're limited to Chinese made microscopes from companies such as swift or Amscope, as you've listed an example. There's absolutely nothing wrong with these microscopes, but you must consider many fac...
