Re: Help needed: DIC components necessary for my Oly

One of the benefits of using uis2 prisms is (afaik) that you do not need specific apo prisms (e.g. u-dpa40) - and this seems to hold true for your uis apo. Maybe we should start out some knowledge base for hobbyists :-) Peter Absolutely agree, we should make some kind of database for these prisms a...

Re: Diatoms DIC

Thanks for the kind and motivating words! :D Your result is very nice. Did you do any background subtraction or other correction? Yeah, for the second 100x stack. It was pretty easy since only one diatom was involved. It's decent without a background swap, all I had to do with stamp out the artefact...

Re: Help needed: DIC components necessary for my Oly

lol.jpg
And here I am doing something stupid. Didn't slot the prism into the holder correctly, rubbed some of the anodising off and made a permanent mark on the lid.

So my 100x shot didn't have the prism centred correctly.

Re: Help needed: DIC components necessary for my Oly

Everything arrived! I don't have a UIS2 40x or 100x. I tried the prisms with my 40x and 100x UIS oil immersion objectives, here are the results. 40x: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50377841608_0aadbad9dd_h.jpg 100x: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50378435493_831f5dce4e_h.jpg The 40x stack ...

Diatoms DIC

First DIC attempt. 40x UIS objective with the U-DIC40 UIS2 prism. Does it look good enough? Hopefully purchasing a UIS2 40x is no longer necessary. Diatoms from Oamaru, NZ. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50377841608_0aadbad9dd_h.jpg I adjusted the prism to get a neutral background colour. The U...

Re: UV against lens fungus

Not really effective, unless the objective is optimised for UV. Oly as I'm sure you're aware marks theirs with 340. I might be purchasing a 10x oly apo infested with shrooms, seller quoted $150 and he's happy to test it. Not sure how I'll deal with those pesky shrooms.

Re: "Disastrous" (completely unexpected!!) 100x oil immersion objective comparison

Is there a good way to clean slides? I don't like ruining the labels. :( Polyester film based labels (eg dymo band) works great, all be it a bit coarse in printing with this cheap kind of printers. And properly degrease slides before sticking labels and rub them then thoroughly on the glass. They c...

Re: "Disastrous" (completely unexpected!!) 100x oil immersion objective comparison

Silicone oil immersion objectives seem to have even better characteristics than water. Higher NA and greater DOF. I wonder how difficult, or rather annoying the oil is to clean up. Cleaning up immersion oil is a major headache, it also ruins the stickers on the slides. But only if you object is emb...

Re: "Disastrous" (completely unexpected!!) 100x oil immersion objective comparison

I share your impression that there is not much difference between the semi-apos and apos of olympus (especially the newer lines - (U)PLanFl N and UPlanSApo. The jump from achromats to flourites is obvious however (i use fl and apos on my diagnostic scope and would never go back). Some while ago i h...

Re: "Disastrous" (completely unexpected!!) 100x oil immersion objective comparison

I have not done any adjustments, straight from the camera. UplanSapo destroys both as far as contrast and clarity, especially when you look through oculars. That's why they cost the money :) Good to know! Yeah, the 100x UplanSApo just obliterates the competition. I'd say it's consistent with my res...

Re: XYZR 4-Axis Trimming Platform Manual Linear Stages Tuning Sliding Table 60X60MM

I'd say it's sort of luck based. I purchased a set a while back and the quality was rather mediocre. I've heard good news and bad news, so I guess it depends on the batch they have. Some are better than others.

Returning something like this won't make sense financially, they are very heavy.
