Re: Fascinating Microbes found in a Pond
Hi - the long ciliates you photographed are Spirostomum sp - I see them often and there are several species. They are magnificent to watch.
So are many other creatures like Tardigrades, rotifers, amoeba, desmids etc.
Cheers

Wine and Vitamin B12 Crystals
I am attaching some crystal images I made of different wines and Vitamin B12 below. The images were taken with polarizing microscopes - Motic BA310 and Zeiss Axioscope. I wrote two articles describing the techniques and methods I explored. Also I discuss some history of Tartaric acid and the contrib...

Callus remover, amino acids, compound W etc
We are still experiencing winter in Calgary so I can't go out to visit the ponds and hunt for protists. Instead I worked on another article about crystals focusing on testing different solvents and trying some different medicines. Below are a couple of images from my article where I share my methods...

Crystals - amino acids, caffeine and THC (cannabis)
Photography crystals in polarized light can make for some beautiful abstract images. I revisited amino acids, did some commercial work on caffeine and experimented with THC the active component of Cannabis which is legal in Canada. I still need to do more work with the THC to get reproduceable resul...

Re: Beta Alanine and L Glutamine
Nice work - I shared how to make curved crystals with amino acids - it requires 95% ethanol as a solvent (from the liquor store - Everclear). Other alcohols did not work for me. There are few other tricks - if interested visit: https://www.canadiannaturephotographer. ... stals.html

Re: Euglenids
Hi Jason re coverslips. I use no 1.5 by Zeiss which are 0.017 mm thick +\- 0.005 - though I think there is more variation. I also sometimes use No 1 coverslips as the thickness refers to the distance above the specimen. I wrote an article about the importance of coverslips here for anyone interested...
