Re: kitchen ants (pictures added)

Very interesting thread, about the last stereo pair i read external muscle and to me (pretty ignorant in insects weirdness) it seems a really strange feature, are you sure abut being a true muscle? Pretty sure, yes. There are numerous articles in the scientific literature that have studied the stru...

Re: BBC Wildlife Mag: Close-up Winners

I was looking through the criteria for using larger lenses (e.g, telephoto or zoom) to achieve closeup images for this site and didn't really find any. Any thoughts on that might be helpful. There are no criteria based on the equipment used, only the size of the area that is photographed. If somebo...

Re: MEJIRO GENOSSEN FL0530 4.0/110 FLOAT LENS TEST IS FINALLY ONLINE

Now I have to figure out how large extension steps are required for focus bracketing as I assume the standard calculators are only valid if one moves the hole rig but not if one uses back focus That's correct and the adjustment is simple: the back focus step is larger by a factor of magnification s...

This is another image of the external muscle. Re: some scales

I prepared my subject by gluing a small piece of wing to a flat surface. Then I let it dry under pressure from the top through a microscope slide. After this I would expect a flat wing. However, it may be that the wing (or the glue) has been deformed by the LED lighting. I am reminded that wings ca...

Re: Lottery card shavings - Wild M400

Interesting indeed, especially when I was trying to make sense of it crossed! (The layout is parallel.)

With aid of viewer, the structure nicely resolves to be very thin multicolored plates, with a few isolated fibers to mix things up.

Re: cross-sections of MLCCs (multi-layer ceramic capacitors)

Hello Rik, I've had a look at the 3D model in Sketchfab. In my opinion, the surface structure comes out very well. Best, ADi Excellent! In the meantime, I think I figured out how to do geometrically correct scaling based on the object's physical size and stack depth. That info is now in the recipe ...

Zerene --> Blender --> Sketchfab: essentials for newbies

This post is to provide a recipe for using Zerene Stacker and Blender to construct 3D models that can be uploaded and displayed at Sketchfab. An example of the result can be seen at https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/microstructure-of-a-fractured-mlcc-die-745ae741389a4e59ac6822b2e68507a9 , "Microstruct...

"Yellow screen" mask generation using 589 nm sodium light

A recent video (April 7, 2024) was recommended to me by YouTube: "This Invention Made Disney MILLIONS, but Then They LOST It!" The title is clickbait, but the content is very interesting anyway. What the video actually describes is a sort of "yellow screen" technique that is similar to green screen ...

Re: cross-sections of MLCCs (multi-layer ceramic capacitors)

Thanks for all your comments and questions. I apologize for my delay in responding! In doing some further investigation I ended up diving into a rabbit hole, which has been consuming most of my think time for the last week or so. I've often wondered whether it would be a good idea to coat specimens/...

0.05 mm per Revolution #-o
Heh, what's an extra zero between friends?

Yeah, that looks like a standard metric micrometer, 0.5 mm per turn, 10 microns per tick mark. But that's pretty good up through 5X, usable at 10X.

I have written to AstrHori to confirm or correct.

Re: For you micro-mineral photography people, how do you deal with holding minuscule, fragile specimens?

It's a bit fiddly, but supporting the specimen on a bed of fibers can give some extra freedom for stable positioning. For an ancient example, see https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2796#p2796 (and the surrounding thread). Edited to add: the stereo view at https://www.photomacrogr...

Björn, Regarding your PM, see FAQ: There's a PM stuck in my Outbox. What's wrong? Most likely Lou is just away from his computer for a while and will see your message when he gets back. As for focus bracketing, I have no experience with that exact lens but perhaps some general info will help. A good...
