I have done a couple of such images- they seem to be a kinda " right of passage" kinda thing- Light source then polarizer/subject/lens then polarizer/sensor .... seems to be the order that works. Wine making stores are a good source of cheap and small amount chemicals like tartaric acid / ascorbic a...

Hi Bit off brand but I have been using a Triopo CF tripod in bogs/wetlands/muckholes for a couple of years and have had no complaints at under $200.00 Regarding heads- I have a RRS BH-55 and cant find a bad thing to say. Simply snug down the locking controls- no need for hard tightning and I have be...

Rogelio and Pau- glad you enjoyed the pics thanks. Pau-I found that using boiled distilled water at a ratio by volume of between 5-10 times that of the ascorbic acid seemed to work. I tried a very saturated solution and that was less successful at generating interesting crystals. I put a couple of d...

Playing with crystals

Charles Krebs once suggested that ascorbic acid was a "rite of passage" subject for those playing with polarization. Thought I would give it a try - cross polarized oblique transmitted light/Nikon 10x 0.25 finite ( Edmunds) and nikon CPL 2.5x on an olympus BHA and Nikon D5100. Oblique lighting via t...

Hi Harold What a lovely topic dear to my heart. While I am in Canada I have a passion for terrestrial orchids anywhere. The first image looks very similar to our Amerorchis sp. Here in Manitoba Canada we have 38 species of native orchids . I currently maintain a website for the local folks intereste...

Hi Having done a lot of wide angle closeups with a 20mm Nikkor f2.8 and extension tubes I am fascinated by your approach. Having a JML 21mm f 3.5 which I have written off so far, I am excited to see another possible use for it that fits with my interests. Any chance you could show some images of you...

Interesting thread- Nice to see the technology expanding. The stuff about QT Loung"s plea is also interesting in a different way. I'm often struck by the difference between photographers and artists. Never having seen his/her work before QT Loung seems to be very much a photographer. I wont name nam...

Some nice options there !!! I would toss in the addition of an L-Plate for the cam that way you can flop the head on its side and still get a horizontal view. Depending on the head and situation it can reduce the height of the body quite a bit.

Isn't an NA of 0.3 for the possible LWD or even the NA of 0.4 for the possible regular WD 20x version mediocre at best? I suspect that there is a silent hope that this JML inherits the same CA free character of the 21 f3.5 but with those potentially low NA values it might also inherit the same borde...

Hi You make some of the most compelling and beautifull scope images I have ever seen . Both you and Charles K have demonstrated that DIC is a very seductive lighting option .
