Laurie, these "blobs" as you call them are mites. Don't know exactly but most commonly these are phoretic mites (using the beetle as a means of transportation). But they might as well be parasites.

Wow! I have only yesterday got my new Xeon workstation and ZS was the main reason for this upgrade. If these numbers hold true I will upgrade my home version of ZS to a pro license which i did not need so far because at home I only do the stacking and had no need for the pro functions. In my institu...

At least Bjørn Rørslett highly praises this lens - when used within its design magnification range.

Basically, a slight upgrade to Photoacute Studio. I downloaded the trial version once but found out that I could achieve similar results in Photoshop with a technique named "Image Averaging". I, too, did not see any advantage because it requires identical frames, and in this case I might also use a ...

Thanks Rik! Will give it a try. I have been so busy lately that I tend to forget to look for newer versions (of other software, too :) ).

I also do my dmap/pmax combining in PS (with a layer mask) recently because it gives me better (more precise and more responsive) control over my brush movements, but the biggest advantage is that any action is fully reversible regardless of when I did it during the editing work. Nice images, BTW. C...

Good work! This is a species of Onthophagus (a dung beetle). Don't know if all of them have these tufts but I recall having seen it many times in various species. For a more precise ID it would probably be necessary to study the beetle more closely. However, a complete dorsal view might be helpful.

First of all - what a marvellous image! I have seen these (and other species of this genus) alive many times in Asia. There is quite a number of arboreal tiger beetles, but only a few, like this one, that are incapable of flight. ITIS specifically notes that Cicindelidae is "invalid". So far as I kn...

Very strange. I use the same combination - not with the 2X but the 5X and 10X - and never ran into such a problem.
One question: where is the tube lens in your set-up? Immediately attached to the obejctive or did you place the tube between tube lens and objective?

From the visual impact I like the diopside image very much. Mineralogically, my favorite is the clinozoisite/pumpellyite combo.

Very nice photos! On flies the ant body part would be the prosternum but I'm not sure whether it is the same in ants :D I think the corresponding parts are more or less similar in most (winged) insects. I would even dare to call it prosternal process. BTW - nice to see you here as well, Chris. Cheers

Craig Gerard wrote:Bob,
Could you indicate the step size used for the 10X and 20X images?
Craig
I also use Mitutoyo Planapo lenses (5x and 10x) but with the MT tube lens.
At 160mm extension I use a step size of 0,007 mm for the 10x and 0,015 for the 5x.
Hope to receive the 20x soon.

Cheers
