Re: An aster floret cross sections

Thank you, Marek! You are a master of capturing micro alien worlds, though :)

Re: Spotted lanternflies have functional gears!

Thank you Rogelio!

Zeiss LSM 980 has a spectral detector, yes.

Igor,

Excellent images as always.

I would like to know if your confocal images are using the standard detector (3 or 4 channels) or using Spectral detector?

Spotted lanternflies have functional gears!

Turns out the nymphs of the spotted lanternfly (an invasive species of a planthopper spreading across the US East coast - it got a lot of press last summer!) have gears coupling hind (jumping) legs to perfectly synchronize their movement! Not totally unexpectedly - all the other families of planthop...

Re: An aster floret cross sections

Thank you! the images were taken with a fluorescent microscope using lasers as a source of excitatory light - you may find more info on confocal microscopy here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confocal_microscopy . hymenium of an Ascomycete fungus

Cross section through the fruiting body of a red cup fungus and its spore-bearing sacs (asci - from Greek Ascus = wineskin). Stained with DAPI, Calcofluor White and Congo Red, imaged at 40x objective magnification on Zeiss LSM 890. Ascomycetes-cleared-40x1aaa-gigapixel-standard-scale-2_00xa.jpg Asco...

And I see they reached all the way back to 2012 NSW for the mushroom gills -- one of Charles Krebs' images. Again it's been flipped.

Re: Microscopy post stamps!

Thank you, Rik! I'm guessing most, if not all, that were captured with a light microscope, were sourced from the NSW website. I can spot at least 2 images taken with an SEM, so those wouldn't enter the contest. Best, Igor Very nice -- and congratulations on inclusion of your snail tongue ! Do you ha...

Re: Morning glory pollen

Igor, Did you used some dye or it was auto fluorescence? Please details about the lasers wavelength. Rogelio I used Congo Red and, except the first 2 images from the top (3 if you count the depth color-coded one), Calcofluor White. I used 405, 488 and 560 nm laser lines in simultaneous mode. The bl...

Wonderful pictures! One niggle: I'm thinking the word should be "stigma", not "stamen". We're looking at the receptive part at the end of the pistil, right? --Rik Thanks, Rik! I should have refreshed my flower anatomy nomenclature before posting :) Yes, this is definitely a lady part of the flower!

Pretty big pollen though, must be what, about 250 µm?
Fern spores are so cool!
Those pollen grain are ~135 µm diameter, with spikes. :)

Morning glory pollen

Hear are some confocal images of morning glory pollen grains attached to the flower's stigma (edited - thanks, Rik!). Agarose sections imaged with Zeiss LSM 980 at 10, 25 and 40x objective magnification. MG-NEW-4-25x-gigapixel-standard-scale-2_00x.jpg Depth color-coded version of the above image: 4-...
