Thanks Mark,
To be honest my default is to use natural light and focus stacking which means I don't have to takes heaps of equipment out in the field - it's just me with my camera on a typical day

Re: long-legged fly, handheld stack
ah thanks Rik, I did notice that they occasionally took off even without flash - I put it down to vibrations from the 5D2 and MPE, which can be quite clunky sounding with the lens extended - but maybe it was the aperture movement. That said, I did a f7 shot of this without it taking off just to have...

long-legged fly, handheld stack
not uploaded anything for a while, so let's see if this works - a long-legged fly, in my experience these things usually disappear with even the slightest hint of a flash so natural light it is...

Total mystery to me how you can manage these superb images handheld. Are you shooting the images one-by-one or are you using some sort of burst shooting mode. If you use burst shooting how can you change apperture during the stack? I guess you are not shooting in live view either and are not using ...

This is amazing! Could you offer some tips on the physical technique? Assuming you didn't use a rail, how do you manage such small, incremental forward movements between frames? Thanks. I think most of the technique I use is discussed in this post Green-veined white in some manner or form, but if t...

One other question, you don't post many photos on flickr is that because this technique is weather dependant so you can take a lot less photos than if you used flash or just some unrelated factor? Saying that, there is nothing wrong with less photos of greater quality. I certainly would like to tak...

sample files for handheld stack
this rather follows on from from a discussion at http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33952 but I thought it might be better to put this into a separate topic sample files are here (88MB) sample images and the resultant stack is this thing... http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/us...

Thanks for that, is that what you used to take this? https://www.flickr.com/photos/daddysaurus/26720869250/in/dateposted/ What aperture and how many images was it? It is really great, it is similar quality to a photo of much insect. Yes, same setup using the mp-e at 5x - this is with a Canon 500D. ...

Thanks for that. I took this photo of a fly on a bush and there was NOTHING to support myself on, so your technique wouldn't have worked in that case, if I understand you correctly Does this work at higher magnifications e.g 4x +? to be honest I would assess the situation and decide whether it was ...

how do you work out where to start and end the stack? On the surface this sounds like a question of composition. You're looking through the viewfinder so you start at or before the first thing you want to have in focus, and end at or after the last thing. But I think you may be asking some deeper q...

However I have one question - in the video you are leaning on the ground. How does it work if you cannot lean on the ground? How do you do it then or is there something I am missing? Also do you need good light for this to work without flash? Does that stability require photographer and camera to l...

How the heck do you do that? I actually discovered this technique more by accident than design - about 6 years ago I forgot to take my flash when I was out on a field trip so used stacking as the alternative - I've never used flash since. Probably easiest to demonstrate with this video of me taking...
