Re: Shooting flies

I'm an amateur dipterist, and it's definitely a problem that small flies collapse when you air dry them after storing them in alcohol. A range of methods are available to professional entomologists. The best is probably critical point drying, followed by chemical drying using Hexamethyldisilazane (H...

Re: Questions regarding Nikon universal DIC condenser.

The later Optiphot 2 DIC system was optimized for the CFN plan achromat objectives. So even with the later system, you would be mixing and matching if you were to use better corrected objectives like those planapos. That said, it seems as if most of the CFN PlanApos works decently well with the Opti...

Re: 2x Mitutoyo objective. Any good?

That's great. Almost a shame to take it apart

I paid just a tad less for mine, which had a defective autofocus, and got back more than what I paid by selling it for parts - after removing the lens. The slide holders in particular seem in demand.

Re: Zetopan help

I've seen reports of such hotspots arising from two different sources: from internal reflections in the photo tube, and from specific objectives used in afocal setups (some older pancake designs, if I remember correctly). Since you're using a projection eyepiece, I would suspect the former, and try ...

Re: Olympus Projection Eyepieces turn apos into achros (not clickbait)

Viktor, thanks for performing the test. Now is clear that Scarodactyl was right and I was wrong ...and Nikon....(put an icon of your taste) My guess seemed (for me) more logical than the idea of Nikon making bad eyepieces as standard being able to make good ones #-o . (now I remember the worst came...

Re: Olympus Projection Eyepieces turn apos into achros (not clickbait)

They also sold a much more expensive better-corrected eyepiece variant but they are rare since nobody bought them. I've managed to snag a pair of these 10x CFD eyepieces, would be very interesting to compare them in an afocal setup against the CF PL 2.5x. Do these CFD show a faint yellow-orange hal...

Hi Viktor

Have you any pics or explanation of your homemade DIC, I am interested in ?
Thank you
JM
Some photos here: https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/ ... 90#p272290

I really should do a proper description of my results sometimes, but haven't had time.

Re: Coleps hirtus

I had totally missed it, so I'm happy it was brought up again. Very nice build. I'm using the Nikon epi prisms in my Vanox AH DIC setup. But I've put them in the condenser turret instead. That rotating nosepiece turret looks great for this kind of experiments!

Re: Sea Monkeys

From what I can tell, there seems to be little evidence that commercially sold "sea monkeys" represent a lab-made hybrid species that is distinct from other, wild-harvested Artemia species like Artemia salina . I find it much more likely to be a marketing ploy from Harold von Braunhut. I'm actually ...
