Re: Exactly how fragile are the mitutoyo 10x 20x etc, or is it an enigma?
Note that I edited the "I'm sure" with "I hope"... Of course, I cannot be sure it will be okay, but there is a higher chance it will be, so get your hopes up :P I doubt anyone could answer the "how big impact is too big for a Mitty'" question. It certainly won't survive a serious (or not that seriou...

Re: Exactly how fragile are the mitutoyo 10x 20x etc, or is it an enigma?
I did purchase one at a good price that was hard to pass up, and yeah, with the generous return policy to boot on the advice I've read here. I fully expect it to arrive in unusable condition, based on the experiences I've read here saying like 60%+ of used ones people have purchased had to be retur...

Re: Exactly how fragile are the mitutoyo 10x 20x etc, or is it an enigma?
Mittys are definitively delicate objectives. I've dropped some Nikons and Olys on the marble base of my rig, some of them attached to the tube lens, I mean those were some serious bumps which caused damage to the metal barrel, but it did not affect performance at all. I've never dropped a Mitty, but...

Re: Efficient diffuse macro lighting for SWD objectives
...I view this extremest macro work (high mag and high NA with short working distance) as no different to microscopy. Specimens have to be found, prepped, cleaned and mounted *before* being presented for photography. I have a beefy stereo for diatom arranging which is much more convenient to use fo...

Re: Efficient diffuse macro lighting for SWD objectives
Nice and smart method. The TU APO 50 has a pretty wideish front part which will make lighting even trickier than with a modded BD, such as the Oly MPlanFl 50 BD ((much shorter WD, but much narrower front part (after the mod)). One major drawback I see in your lighting method is that it requires of a...

Re: Scales thread
Ah, I forgot to add in my reply that I reallllly enjoyed the black and gold scales pictures, the colors are really lovely to me. I played a bit more and there I should mention is the caveat that finding an optimum point for the dcr-250 and refocusing seemed to come at the expense of the sides of th...

Very nice photos. Sunset moth scales are challenging, especially if there are dark and bright scales in the same frame. Well done.

Re: Loss of Robert OToole
I just now saw this sad news I'm speechless...
I've had the pleasure of chatting with Robert on several occasions. He was not only a great photographer, but also a great person.
My deepest condolences to his family.
Rest in peace, Robert. You'll be missed.
