Re: New Mitutoyo apo 10x

Nope, it's more unforgivable than that. If it's a mit, then fair enough. I've handled -3 versions with delamination too, I'm not sure if it's exclusive to -2 and older versions. Even if there's a correlation, it can be entirely attributed to age, as -2 can be a dozen years old compared to -3 which ...

Re: New Mitutoyo apo 10x

That's a shame. Is that the -3 version? If it is, that would be bad news, I thought the issue was limited to the version -2. It is hard to see in the pics, but if the spotting is on the periphery only, as it seems, it should still perform well and I'd say outperforming your Fluors. Let us know how i...

Re: New Mitutoyo apo 10x

It is already clear that the objective has delamination (as seen in the video). So partial refund is no longer an option. Mitutoyo objectives are irreparable. The OP just has to return it for a full refund. I meant if the unit were perfect optically and the only issue were that it is not new, as adv...

Re: New Mitutoyo apo 10x

It is much more likely that the user stores it improperly rather then factory stores their manufactured lenses where they are prone to delamination. I was not referring to factory storage, which I don't doubt is adequate, but to issues in the manufacturing process, type of optical adhesive used, ba...

Re: Canon DSLR discounts

I suggested the D810 as a DSLR option since its current price is similar to the 5Ds R. I've used the D810 and loved it, except the double shutter actuation mess. Haven't used the 5Ds R, someone on here (I believe Ray) tried it and I recall he was not impressed with it. If small pixel pitch is what y...

Re: New Mitutoyo apo 10x

A lens can delaminate without being used. One of the causes of lens delamination is manufacturing issues. Improper storage, exposure to some chemicals and their vapors are other possible causes.

Re: New Mitutoyo apo 10x

Return it. That's a spotting-like delamination on an internal doublet, sadly pretty typical of Mitutoyo "series 2" objectives. I've had at least two 20X with that issue, one of them was NOS/unused.

Re: Micro-Symmar 3.5x

Sorry to hear the lens does not perform as expected. I promised myself I will no longer buy expensive, "exotic" lenses with no reliable tests backing them up, no matter how brillant they look on paper. Yeah, it's pretty exciting, but enough time and money spent/wasted is enough... I still buy unknow...

Re: Canon DSLR discounts

The 5Ds and 5Ds R are 5 years old cameras now, the price drop is completely normal and not a bargain. Those are still very capable cameras with a few weaknesses, the bigger one for me is the quite poor DR for such high-end, high-res FF cameras. Note that the "R" do has a physical OLPF, but its effec...

Re: New Mitutoyo apo 10x

I agree with everything Chris S. said in this thread. E-buying lenses / objectives always involves risk. The risk is higher in the case of Mitutoyo objectives, since they are very delicate optics. I've owned quite a few Mitutoyo objectives over the years and I can confirm cosmetic condition is not a...

Danke sehr, Kurt! Your Spanish is certainly better than my photos :P This particular picture was not easy to edit. I made a beginner's mistake, framing without taking into account the pretty significant change in scale due to depth. So the stacked pictured came out very poorly framed, jaw almost tou...

Re: Alien

Kurt, thank you for your kind words. There is really nothing special in my lighting setup. I use 3 modded Ikea lamps with 1100 lm LEDs and simple "DIY" diffusers and reflectors (when needed). I just play with the incidence of light and the distance between the light sources and the diffuser, until I...

Re: Alien

Thank you all. I have quite a few beetles, which I plan to photograph in the coming months. Beetles are wonderful models and quite easy to work with, compared to other insects.

Re: sunset moth

I haven't measured the WD, the MPlanFl 50/0.80 has 1mm WD, so I thought it is the same WD, but just looked at it and it is indeed 0.66mm. Anyway, I don't find lighting to be an issue. Though I think a modded BD gives more room for lighting at that WD. Here is mine after surgery:
