Re: A rather 'summerish' spring.
Oh sorry then, my bad that somehow and for some reason I thought you were a fellow German and assumed you were posting from Germany. However, since - especially for biologists - it is often interesting to know where the critters are from, that we get to see photos of, I would be happy about th...

Re: A rather 'summerish' spring.
Very nice pictures, Chris. Very much enjoyed and appreciated, as I do all your other most valuable contributions, your excellent photos as well as the sound information on photo technique and equipment you generously provide! That said, I here feel compelled to add one little piece of information, t...

Re: Debunking the high NA / coverslip correction myth
Maybe you are aware of it anyway, but just in case to help with your trials: For such high NA objectives, as cover slip/cover glass thickness is critical for best performance, I recall that in the lab there were coverslips with narrower tolerances than the standard ones around. I just had a look at ...

Re: P. ulysses with the "weird Nikon"
Yeah, when it comes to sourcing used tech equipment, the grass for our US American friends on the other side of the pond is so much greener than over here. :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts, guys. With your refocussing method findings you have blazed a new trail, Hristo! And thanks for the ...

Re: P. ulysses with the "weird Nikon"
Thanks for the clarification, Hristo! Have you ever used such an "unbranded" 1501-9398 20x Nikon with good results? Or if not, do you expect they could give good results by your refocussing method? I ask since they are cheaper than the branded ones... after all we disadvantaged Europeans have to pay...

Re: short locking tweezers or other small holders / manipulators? Alligator too harsh, fragile subjects for pins
For fragile, delicate objects often so called featherweight forceps are used. They are made of very flexible stainless steel, so the force of the grip is just given by the spring force of the flexible steel which avoids damaging or crushing the fragile objects. I haven't seen locking featherweight f...

Re: Specimen holding, this surplus goniometer or an aliexpress xyz linear stage?
What are you using for the vertical linear motion surface for Z(on the back side of this) ? Sandwiched between the two angle brackets is a Newport M-426 linear stage. Also, I've got rough mental plans to motorize my goniometer so I can move the subject itself via Wi-Fi and a pi pico w. Yeah, I have...

Re: P. ulysses with the "weird Nikon"
Awesome details and very nice lighting!
Was "the weird Nikon" used here one of those Nikons from a gene sequencer, designed to be used with the thicker glass of a flow cell, just labelled with a number like 1501-9398?

Re: Insect fece
"Hmmmm" indeed, .... for a faecal pellet this object seems to have a lot of structures. From where it was found and from its looks, I am with Scarodactyl, that it reminds of a tapeworm proglottis. Half the size of a sesame seed woud be rather small, and despite your photo through the microscope, one...

Re: kitchen ant
I very much enjoy your new stereo pair that shows the mouthparts from below. So many details, lovely! I am surprised to hear about the "endangered" status. Are your Tapinoma species not fond of living in kitchens like ours? As to the "endagered" status: With Germany being a rather densely populated ...

Re: kitchen ant
More outstanding photographs! The stereos of the mouthparts are a treat and really rock! And you have even managed to capture the "eyelet" in a living specimen! I wonder why the picture of the petiolus in my key doesn't show it, and neither is it mentioned in the text. Now I have to look at a Tapino...

Good and useful hack!
It's small and portable, so I can imagine it could be useful especially for field work.
Thanks for sharing!
