Re: Small backlit stage
Out of interest, will you be using the backlight to help with background removal for coin photography? If so, I have a shared interest in the results you get! Yes, it is for ancient coins. I have a commission from a numismatic archaeologist at a Spanish university to replace/augment their current c...

Re: Exactly how fragile are the mitutoyo 10x 20x etc, or is it an enigma?
Well, I dropped one from waist height onto a bare concrete floor. I think it is de-centered now, but still produces pretty good images overall. The problem I saw with most of the bad lenses was "delam". I don't know if this happens when a lens is allowed to "fall or drop" but it's definitely bad ne...

Re: Exactly how fragile are the mitutoyo 10x 20x etc, or is it an enigma?
I purchased several Mittys, 5x, 10x, 20x, 50x, and every one of them had issues. The only good ones I've purchased were brand new. Not sure how much of a shock is required to damage them though. Some looked fine by inspection, but produced a poor image. Others had delam. I don't think the delam is d...

Re: KEYENCE VH-Z75 what is it?
Looks like a nice microscope Z-stage, and decent XY-stage as well, and you get the objective as well! You'll need to research to find the manual as it is discontinued, but appears to be a 10:1 zoom lens with a high quality objective. Great score for $81+shipping.

Thanks Alan! This one looks good at 75mm diameter. I'll see if I can find it from a US seller.

Re: Small backlit stage
Has anyone seen a small backlit stage? Round is preferable, perhaps 100mm diameter. See if this might suit your purposes: https://aliexpress.ru/item/1005006132420668.html?sku_id=12000035904315191&spm=a2g2w.productlist.search_results.3.1a653f428LGVJP Looks very good! But I can't tell how large the i...

Edited to add: I picked up a 6.5" round LED light from Amazon to try it out.

Re: cross-sections of MLCCs (multi-layer ceramic capacitors)
I did a lot of this kind of work in my last job at a MEMS startup (Cavendish Kinetics, now owned by Qorvo). Quality was one of the many hats I wore at that company. Most of the work was looking at failure analysis of the packaging, but occasionally I did some actual MEMS xsections, and I did some sl...

Re: Remedy for vibrations
Thank you! OK...camera and stage on one platform... make sense... Red = Sorbothane pads Will adding second layer of such pads further reduce the vibration? I see they have different "hardness-softness"/Durometer or whatever it is called and different diameters... so a lot of combinations are possib...

Re: Remedy for vibrations
Question is: will use of Sorbothane pads 2 times - once under the big board (lets say about 60-80 pounds total) and second time under the rail/stages (lets say 30-40 pounds) and head/camera (another 5-20 pounds) help with vibrations? If the red squares in your drawing are all sorbothane pads, then ...

Re: Lens test wafer (RobertOToole)
Great selection Rik. This immortalizes Robert's method and skills and is a great posthumous honor to him. He was one of the first to go all-in to use semiconductor wafers with fine-pitch lithography for comprehensive, qualitative lens testing, and used it with good results to distinguish between goo...

Re: Lens recomendation for film reproduction
Hmm, an extension ring will cause a similar problem as bellows, except for the lack of flexibility. If you want more magnification, I'd recommend using a 1.4x teleconverter. It will allow your lens to work as it should in terms of focal length and close range correction, while giving you a magnifica...
